Just came across 94.9 running an alt/rock format, more skewed towards alt, with occasional AAA and alt oldies as well.
No voiceovers save for a terse 'KHTB Provo'. Sounds alot like I imagine Bonneville's 'The Sound' in LA to be doing.
Discovered this about 945pm, it's still on just after 10pm. No commercials either right now.
Could be a stunt format?

This is still live this morning, apparently this will go until Citadel either moves KKAT to it or starts some new format on it. Mostly rock/alt/AAA mixed together. Still no DJs, seems to be reminiscent of the old KRMQ days on 94.9 save that it's a rock format, not the jazz one.

How trippy.
KKAT 94.9? Can you imagine how much one of us would've been mocked 4-5 years ago to have predicted that?

Something is REALLY up at 94.9 now. I'm hearing sweepers, liners, etc.
One says 'We're still here', gives the dial position, 94.9, etc. The new name is '94-9 Rock'. An active rock station to the hilt.
Looks like KKAT will remain on 107.5, and it's entirely possible that the KHTB call may not move to 97.5, etc.
This looks to be setting up for the biggest format war we've seen in the region in over 20 years. I don't htink I've seen one this major since the top-40 wars of the early 80s between KLRZ (also had been on 94.9), KFMY 96.1, and KISN 97.1, and maybe some smaller players. 101.1 KDAB was also there but I don't recall how big a player they were if any. KCPX 98.7 flipped from rock to top-40 in the middle of all that too. The battle lasted from about 1982 to about 1985.
So Big Rog has his work cut out for him in this battle. Hang on to your seats everyone. This is the biggest battle we've seen since many of us can remember.

Rog -
You need to cut some sweepers saying you guys are "the real thing" (ala "Don't settle for the generic. The original 97.5 The Blaze.")
It's awesome you guys are in-their-face with the "fighting corporate radio" sweepers. Now go head to head and out-and-out make fun of the fake 94.9.
I think a war would be very refreshing for the radio dial. Maybe have a contest where listeners call in and make fun of their friends who haven't switched to 97.5. Not sure the finer details, but I do think you could get some word of mouth promotion with a contest like that - especially at construction sites where one guy has a radio tuned to a rock station.
Can't wait to hear more fun coming. Good luck!

First, let me tell you that it is official that 94 9 Rock is here to stay. I had just gotten this confirmed by some reliable sources. In fact if you go to the Blazes web site they are kind of hinting the same thing. Second, I have some ideas for 94 9 Rock. I think it would be good to put song tags behind their music. I do think they should go one step farther though. They need to tell us if a particular song is new or not. That’s the only thing I don’t like about those song tags. They don’t tell us if a song is new or not. Third, this format war could get very ugly. It reminds me of a major format war that was in Boise Idaho from 1990 tell 1993. We had first a country station (KIZN 91) change to (Magic 93.1) That was in 1990. We also had KYSS (Kiss FM) change to Kizn 92. They changed to country. So, you had originally Kizn 93 a country station change to AC. Then you had Kiss FM on 92.3 change to Kizn 92 change to country. In 1991, Magic 93.1 changed to top forty. Eventually there liners said “Thanks for making the switch to Magic 93.1. That was in reference to KF95. The competition was so ugly between Magic 93.1 and KF95 that there was an Air talent personality on KF95 that a lot of people in Boise liked. He was Evan the Hit man. One November evening in 1992, Evan the Hit man mad a big announcement. He told people that he was making the switch to Magic 93.1 and to turn your dial there. A few minuets he was on his cell phone saying “This is Magic 93.1. The folks at KF95 were angry and took Magic 93.1 to court. I am not saying this will happen here in Salt Lake. But with what inside information I know about what’s going with the 2 companies, there is definitely potential for something like this to occur here in Salt Lake. That could be very interesting. I will talk to you all later.

Thanks for the suggestions Henry. We'll take them under advisement. And Lumpy where's the love?? ;D kidding.
What I really love about today is how Citadel has ripped off our imaging, our positioning statements, our formatic style, even our clocks! AND they're saying "Thanks to our great listeners, we're still here!"
Whatsamatter Kelly? Can't fight fair? Can't beat us straight up? Gotta resort to LYING? Is that leash tight enough for ya?
Good luck guys. Personally I hope you choke on your antequated policies and your complete lack of integrity.

Last night I heard someone at The Blaze say that lawyers are looking in to this. I personaly like The Blaze better then K-Bare. I am not just saying that because I am posting on this topic. I have always liked The Blaze better then K-Bare. I do like the fact that there is a lot of ballence beteween talk and music. I wonder when you will be able to here The Blaze in Evanston Wyoming. As fare as the lawyers looking in to this, that might bee a good idea to send a message to citidal to be arigenal. I will talk to you later.

As far as 'lawyers looking into this', they can't do anything about the format being similar. The FCC bans any sales agreement clause that says that a station involved in a sale cannot air a similar format. The FCC turned back a sale application a couple years ago because the underlying agreement contained such a clause. The agreement said the buying party could not run a country format on any of its stations in the market.
The reasoning was 'market forces' must take precedent.
94-9 Rocks is doing something right here otherwise, they are not using the name and the only reason the call letters are still there is the process has not been complete in transferring the KHTB calls to 97.5 through the FCC. And so far I haven't seen any real issue with the sweepers, the top-40 wars of the 70s and 80s always had similar sounding sweepers and such, but there always were enough differences to tell them apart despite that.

Hahahahaha... Rog sounds like he's reading out of some radio manual. Did you really whine about someone stealing your imaging, liners & listeners. What's next? Oh wait... they stole your songs too! lmao!!
A fair fight??? Hahahahahahahah... do you really think anyone cares about fair. Radio's a business! I can't believe you went at Kelly Hammer about not being fair or having integrity. Hahahahaha... I'm peeing my pants... oh, stop it... hahahahaha.
You seem like a good guy Rog, but come on... there's no way you're this green.

This is going to be a lot of fun to watch. I've been flipping between 94.9 and 97.5 like crazy, and I don't even like rock that much.
The pluses and minuses:
94.9 (+) Better signal (+) Bigger company to back it up. (-) Less creative freedom (although not nearly as bad as Clear Channel) (-) Bigger company to drag it down.
97.5 (+) Greater creative freedom. (+) Local ... local ... local! (-) Inadequate signal. (-) Less promotional resources (in terms of billboards, TV spots)
I do think it lacks a little creativity on Citadel's end to simply steal the content, but I can't say I blame them. In a way, isn't it a tribute to Millcreek that they'd keep all the same content?
If Millcreek can make U92 a force in the marketplace, I'm sure they can make 97.5 generate cash too, and probably have some fun with it. It'll be fun to see what both sides come up with, and in the meantime, the listener comes out the winner.
