Good Ol' '80s Cartoons

Hey, I'm starting to have some kind of wish, for some unknown reason, to go back and relive some of the time when Saturday mornings were filled with the good ol' cartoons from the '80s, and those that were from earlier times but still playing in the '80s. I always had a special, cozily fun kind of feeling while watching these shows. Anyone else with me on this? I'd love for the networks to bring back several goodies, including these. (Did we already talk about this in another thread some semi-little while back?) Let's hear your chimes in:

What about Kidd Video?
How about Rubik's Cube?
Mighty Orbots?
Gobots
Transformers
Giligan's Planet
The Snorks
Garfield and Friends
The Smurfs
That one show about the Ewoks
The Littles (That started in the '80s, right?)

How about that one guy who could morph into a red sports car with a phone? What was that cartoon called?

Were the Super Friends during Saturdays or just after school on the weekdays?

And Scooby-Doo--was he in both times? (Did he start in the '80s, or earlier?)

Oh, there were more. What other Saturday cartoons from the '80s?

He-Man was my favorite for the after-school time, but I'm concentrating on Saturday mornings for now.


And then of course there were the cartoons from before, that kept on going into the '80s (new episides or just replays, either way), too:

Never forget Bugs Bunny and his buddies--Daffy Duck, Wile E. Coyote, etc., huh?

CBS Storybreak with Bob Keeshan started out with a realish scene and then turned into a cartoon, right?

When did Pink Panther come out? He kept on going into the '80s, but also brought his sons to the show starting in the '80s, right?

Fat Albert started earlier (right?), also, but kept going in the '80s, too.

Were the Peanuts playing on Saturdays during this time?

(I wasn't quite as big a fan of the Disney group, though, and don't remember them on Saturdays, anyway--except Donald Duck and Sons or something like that--but they're okay.)


What other Saturday-morning cartoons come up as either (1) specifically from the '80s--especially with a particularly '80s feel to them--or (2) from an earlier period but still continued playing in the '80s? Any particular nostalgia from those for you?

After we've covered the cartoons, what about the other children's shows during the Saturday-morning-cartoon period?

Hey, even any fond memories of the music or looks from some of the show break announcements ("We'll be right back...")? Or the little mini-shows (Scooter Computer and Mr. Chips, or the one about the sundae on a Saturday, or the one about beans and rice, or...?

And then of course some of the long-timers (like Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny in their traditional form) went into the '90s still on the main networks, right?

Want it back? Where could we find this now, if anywhere? Your memories?

remember BlackStar? and G-Force Battle of the Planets, I think that was my favorite, Thundar The Barbarian was good also, Mask, Cops, Macron-1, Go-Bots, Voltron, Jacye and The Wheeled Warriors, Centurions, Bravestar, voltron, these were all my favorites, and Im sure ive left some out, He-man, Gi-Joe, stuff like that is more common, but I loved them all!!

Hey, Grim, thanks for that link. Oh yeah, Tom & Jerry went into the '80s (but I can't remember if they were on Saturdays or weekdays or both).


Whow, BMU Tom, you listed several that I didn't even remember, cool. Ya liked Voltron so much ya listed it twice, huh? :-) I've heard of Voltron, but for some reason never paid enough attention to it to know when it was on and watch it. I should have known it might be a good one, though. I hear that might have been like the Mighty Orbots.

Oh, and the Mr. T cartoon was on on Saturdays, as well. (I didn't really care that much for it as the others, though.)

I wish I could find Pole Position and Kidd Video and Rubik's Cube, etc. on this Cartoon Network.

Scooby Doo originally ran in the late sixies and early seventees. There have been newer versions too, but that was the original. (Odd but true, my first crush was the original Daphne. <g> )

I never watched it, but somewhere I have an audio tape of the open to "Kidd Video" complete with an NBC bump from the "Let's All Be There" days.

Nobody mentioned "Captain Planet and the Planeteers"? IMDB claimed the show didn't debut until 1990, but I know that's wrong. It had to have been out by '85 at least. Horrible show. What too overbearing and lecturing. Never could stand it. It was created by Ted "Mouth of the South" Turner, so I'm not surprised.

I don't know what shows carried on from the 70s to the 80s.. I must admit I 'm too young too remember. I could research it -- but now you've got me reminiscing about those 80s shows.....

Care Bears, Strawberry Shortcake, Rainbow Bright, Rescue Rangers, Duck Tales (Tails?), SuperGirl, Captain Planet and those animals with the Jelly Bean-ed middles ("yummy yummy yummy, I've got sparkles on my tummy") were the shows that got me up on Saturdays.

Every break reminded you that "we'll be right back", and every show ended with "DIC" [pronounced 'Deeeeek'] (I used to think they were saying a bad word. It sounds naughty when you're five years old and you're just learning to sound out words phoenetically.)

I know this these aren't cartoons; but my 80's afternoons were filled with DoubleDare and Full House. And if I was lucky, I got to play Duck Hunt or Super Mario Brothers on the brand new Nintendo. A few years later, I got to play Tetris and Dr. Mario on a new hand-held Nintendo called a 'Game Boy'. Wow! hehehe

Now that you listed Care Bears, Rainbow Brite, Strawberry Shortcake, and Supergirl, etc., even though I didn't watch those I remember they were pretty big in the '80s, too. Those were on Saturdays, right? Well, there are some about which I can't remember if they were on Saturdays or school days.

Oh yeah, there's that Dic thing--it can sound like a naughty word whether it was pronounced by the kid like "deek" or prounounced the way it looks like it would normally be (as in the name of Dick Clark). No big deal, eh, because the usual way (though it can sometimes sound bad) is simply the same as a guy's name, right? But oh well, I think they tried to make it cute-sounding by using that pronounciation they had the little kid say it with.

Ya know, what's interesting is that I don't have a single standalone video game system besides that old Atari 2600 that my parents used to own, which they later gave to my best male friend's family (my best female friend being my wife, of course), which that family later got bored of and gave back to us (my parents' family). Heheh...

Yeah, my parents still have ours, too...in storage, somewhere...probably at their store. I should go over there and get it and go back in time and play those games a little, again, like I do from time to time with the Commodore 128 and 64.

I recently retrieved my 2600 fromt he depths of storage hell, but the sound doesn't work. Haven't had time to fiddle with it. *sigh*

Aww, that's too bad. I hope you can open it and just find something as simple as just a loose wire that you can solder up to get the sound working again.

But with my luck, your problem (or/and if I had that problem, it) would be more complicated... Blehhh! Good luck on that.

Me too. It doesn't quite play the same though. Like when I used the keyboard to play Breakout, I maxed out (2 boards, 864 points) on the first try. I was NEVER that good.

Wow! I loved all those cartoons that are already listed. I was a Saturday morning FREAK. My favorite has to be the original Scooby-Doo! I'm a girl and I really wanted to BE Daphne! She was smart, beautiful and fun..Scoob was kind of the doggy equivalent to R2D2.

Remember the Jetsons?

My sister had to watch that every Saturday morning.

I loved American-Bandstand and couldn't go outside until my cartoons and Bandstand was over. Then Soul Train came along, and I didn't leave the house until afternoon.
