Tuesday's edition of All Access reports that one lawmaker wants the expected merger between the two satcaster giants to include a new caveat: an HD receiver in all sat. capable radios. Here's the poop:
"Letters from House Telecommunications Subcommittee Chairman ED MARKEY (D-MA) and NATIONAL PUBLIC RADIO to FCC Chairman KEVIN MARTIN both urge the Commission to make any merger of XM SATELLITE RADIO and SIRIUS SATELLITE RADIO conditional on putting HD RADIO technology in all new satellite radio receivers.
In addition, MARKEY wants the Commission to freeze satellite prices to consumers for six years, twice the length of time as proposed by SIRIUS CEO MEL KARMAZIN, plus additional set-asides of channel space for minority programming (asserting that 12 is "inadequate") and addressing of the issue of interference by terrestrial repeaters on wireless services. NPR also is asking for 25% of the total satellite radio spectrum for minority broadcasters and emergency services. "

That would be the kiss of death. However, I could use an HD receiver in my can opener.
