Hi everyone. I was DXing the other night (7-19-08) and heard a station on 1490 that was playing Coast to Coast AM (in particular, Art Bell: Somewhere in Time). Around 9:30 PM I heard something that sounded like KCEA or KCEO or something to that effect. I could barely hear it but I did manage to record it. Here is the ID followed by C2C coming back in from the break: www.ubstudios.com/dx/slcids/unknown1490.mp3 I adjusted the noise level on it so I could hear it better, but it doesn't seem to help. What I know is that it was on 1490, it was C2C, it was 9:23 PM and the station starts with K something something a or o or some other letter I can't hear. Can you help? Thanks in advance. By the way, its not KUGR. I worked for that station and this isn't their jingle.

I looked at the FCC database and nothing close to that is on 1490, nor is there anything close to a KCE* in that database as well
I also couldn't make anything out on the file
Sorry I couldn't be of more help
I hope you enjoy this DX board, I had you in mind, especially after seeing your DX page

Hey Stu - I do lots of DXing too. Have for years! I did some heavy-duty research for ya and I can't seem to come up with much. I CAN tell you this much - I know the jingle style. It's identical to our KEVA jingles here in Evanston. Those jingles were produced as a special package by TM Century in the 90s for ABC Radio Networks "StarStation" affiliates only. So the jingle you heard is definitely from that series and probably from a station that IS or USED TO BE (like us) a StarStation affiliate. StarStation is ABC's AC satellite network. And you had to be an affiliate to get those. If you want proof I'll send you one of our KEVA jingles and you'll see it's exactly the same. Now then.....that being said, I went to Radio-Locator and didn't find much of anything. With all the 1490s listed there was hardly anything with the calls you mentioned or anything close. Even more so, I went to Coast-To-Coast AM's web site and went through the affiliates listings in the various states around us and there are very few on 1490. KRUI in Ruidoso Downs, NM is an affilate and they are at 1490. I guess that's a slight possibility but it sure doesn't sound like they are singing "KRUI" but it could be. Especially given conditions right now.....it's summer. Most of what we hear is from the sides of us or to the south....not much from the north. So I'd rule out Montana or Washington or Oregon. But it's DX so ya never know. And then you're talking about a GRAVEYARD frequency! In all the GY DX I've done you can have things pop up for just a second or two. I reallly thing the "Coast to Coast" you were hearing was coming from somewhere else and the jingle you heard happened to be a station that popped in at that moment. A station that is probably AC or used to be and still held on to their "starstation" jingles. I am not sure what KCID in Caldwell, ID is using for their jingles but Radio-Locator lists them as oldies. I remember DXing graves one night and I sat on 1490 for a while and actually DID hear some Idaho mentions so I've gotten KCID before. It's possible KCID was at one time a Starstation affiliate and still uses those jingles during their oldies format. So you may have heard KCID jump in for a bit and then otherwise Coast-To-Coast coming in from somewhere else ---- probably KUGR. KUGR's got a tall 5/8 wave tower - Al planned it that way back in 1976 so that even at night their groundwave signal would get in to Rock Springs pretty well even though Rock Springs is 10 miles away. I know here at KEVA we're just about gone at 10 miles away at night. Anyways...that's my view on it. We may never know That's DX for ya! Michael n Wyo

I had a few others listen to the file and one of them who owns a station near Lake Tahoe said that it was their sister station KOWL. I find that hard to believe for 1kw on (like you said) a graveyard frequency.
I used to work for KUGR back in 2002 and they have singing jingles like that but I know them well enough that this wasn't one of theirs. I have also heard KUGR from here previously. Also, they don't ID before C2C comes back on (or at least they didn't when I worked there). They ID after it leaves for the :30 break and it is an assortment of singing jingles that sound like Kay You Gee arrrrrre, with the R extended. They also often have the "Green River" singing voice after that.
I also heard the station in question quite clearly before this recording and was listening to the program (C2C) but the station began fading considerably and then the ID popped on right after the half.
If I can hear KTSN 1340 and KTMM on 1340 during the day (both are 1kw) then I likely can hear KOWL at night. I don't know.
If anyone else has a 100% confirm on this I'd like to know. For now, I'm keeping the KOWL up on my logs, even though its one heck of a record for 1kw.

I have a tape of my DX catches I did in the 90's man sometimes it took me days to get an ID, I used to have a book that listed all AMs, but now with the internet it is much easier to get the info, and you don't have to pay
Hey Michael, have you tried any of the HD radios that have AM stereo? I own two of them and I must admit they are not bad, what do you think?
