The fact that the Utah Transit Authority will have to rename the Delta Center Station got me thinking about the fact that I don't like ANY of the station names they have at present for their downtown stations. Well, some I like, but those names are being used at the wrong stations.
Regarding the Delta Center Station, since UTA will be extending the line through the Gateway to the Intermodal hub, with one or two stations in the Gateway development proper, I think Gateway Station would not be the best possible choice. I would rather have it be known as the Triad Center Station (after the name of the office park development located adjacent to the station opposite of the basketball arena.
Now for the other downtown stations. Take Library Station. How is a city visitor looking at a map supposed to know that it is the PUBLIC library that that station is adjacent to? There are other prominent libraries downtown, such as the Family History Library. So I think that UTA should rename that station "Public Library Station".
There are two courthouses near the Courthouse Station (the state courthouse and the federal courthouse). So shouldn't that station be called the Courthouses Station? Or, even better, the Legal District Station? Or maybe even Hotel District Station?
And then there is the Gallivan Plaza Station. No city visitors have ever heard of Gallivan Plaza. It should be called the City Center Station, since that is the part of the city in where it is physically located.
The next stop up the line, the station called "City Center Station" should in my mind be called the Temple Square Station, since it is closer to Temple Square than is the station UTA chose to call Temple Square.
The station UTA chose to call "Temple Square" should have, in my mind, have been called either "Salt Palace" or, more generically, "Convention Center" since that stop is adjacent to one of the entrances to the Salt Palace Convention Center, and it is also the closest stop to the Salt Palace's Abravenal Hall.
