(This thread is going to concern the shooting in Trolley Square tonight itself. There is a separate thread in the Metro section regarding the coverage of the incident.)
One word probably sums it up. Wow.
You don't exactly think of Salt Lake as a hotbed of civil unrest, yet it happens sometimes. At least they put the creep out of our misery.

No question the TS shootings were a tragedy.
But it seems to me that Utah has it's fair share of nut jobs. As much as the dominant culture would have people think that Utah is a little slice of heaven. I think for it's population Utah gets more pub for kookiness than just about any other state of similar population.
Think about over the last 5 years or so how much has happened that has made national news. Just off the top of my head Elizabeth Smart kidnapped and then found living with a whacked out street preacher. Lori Hacking husband kills her and dumps her at the university hospital after weeks digging at the dump they find her. Destiny Norton 5 year old kidnapped killed and stored in a basement. Some other nut job sets off a bomb at the City Library. Then theres Warren Jeffs on the FBI wanted list and his subsequent arrest and trial. Then theres Tom Green and the photos of his 30 children on the news and internet. And remember the other guy and gal that kidnapped their own child from Primary Children's medical center and took him to the mountains and fed him a diet of lettuce and watermelon because he was the Christ Child? If one goes back even further there was the shooting at the family history library from some guy on a mission from god. And then a few weeks after that the shootings at the Triad center. And now the Trolley Square shootings it was even the top story for the BBC news on KBYU.
Add to all those things that Utah is the home of Gayle Ruzicka and she has to have a nut job equivalent of at least 50... probably more. ;D

I was just thinking about that too grim. I just think about how busy the Salt Lake Police department is. Those guys should get a much bigger paycheck than they do, and much bigger than the cops who don't get as much action like those in Morgan or Tremonton.
Salt Lake has a ton of nuts and its a shame. I also think, though, that the national media likes to play up all the big events in SLC. It seems that maybe they treat it like "wow, this happened in SLC?" ...but when the same thing happens in Phili 15 minutes earlier, its no big deal. I remember when they were still workin out the details of Lori Hacking and FOX News broke away for a fire in Salt Lake at a furnature warehouse. It was probably convenient and that is why they did it, but how many places burn to the ground each day? Elizabeth Smart and the Olympics made Salt Lake City a city of interest in the states.
