As if the TPiR news (see other board) wasn't bad enough, I heard the plans for the new Star Trek movie today. Apparently they didn't learn from that disaster known as "Enterprise" and have decided to try and top themselves and make something even worse.
Get this. They're going to take the characters from the original series and recast them.
You've GOT to be kidding me.
I'll admit that it does have one very good thing going for it. J.J.Abrams ("Lost", "Alias" etc.) He's good, but I can't see how he can save this. The Trekkers are not going to sit still for this. Maybe this is what puts the Trek franchise to bed for good.

Aren't half the characters dead? So are they going to only recast the dead characters, but let William Shatner play Kirk, or are they re-casting him too? 'Cause it would be fun to see half the case come out with walkers and O2 tanks.
Another option: They could work with George Lucas to do a cruddy CG of old characters.......or they could always paste clips together.....sort of like a YouTube mashup.
Hey, now that I think about it - I may be interested in seeing this movie (at least in the dollar theatre) just to see how it all comes out. I could always bring a buddy and MST3K the show.

Trying to do anything in the original timeline is going to be problematic. The biggest problem is that at least two of the original cast members have passed away. If they insist on doing that, they should continue with where they were going with the 6th movie (the last with the original cast) and try to get George Takei to be the captain on his own ship and hire a new cast around him. Then when he doesn't feel like doing it anymore you can promote the first officer to captain and continue the franchise.
