Hello! I'm 15 years old and from Wegberg/Germany, a quite small small town in Germany's west and I need your help. I know that this won't be about radio but it's hard to find a board which is dealing with Utah. So I decided to post my little problem right here. My English teacher wants to make my any pupil of my class to do a presentation about an American State. As you may guess, I have chosen Utah. I do not want to make a standard department, but a special one. So I need lots of information about the following topics: • Famous people from Utah • Prejudices against Utahns(?) Those should make my presentatin more funny and - hopefully - more interesting for my teacher and my classmates. I don't need the other information, because there are written on Wikipedia but it would be nice if you would help me. It would maybe be helpful if you would give me a link to other boards which are dealing with Utah (via PM). I'm thankful for any messege and I hope my English isn't that bad. Greetings from Germany

I think no one has answered, because the topics on which you requested a response, famous Utahns and prejudices against Utahns, were so broad.
Regarding the first topic, famous Utahns, you really need to define what you mean by "famous" and "famous for what?" There are a LOT of different areas of human endeavor in which a person can become famous.
Regarding the second topic, did you mean prejudices that people in Germany might have about people living in Utah that they would not also have more generally about residents of other states in the United States? You have to understand that Utahns are not an ethnic group -- we do not have a distinct historical tribal background like what is (or was) found in some areas of Europe. Utah was settled originally by Native Americans, then by people of a particular religious community, but quickly many other settlers came to Utah from all parts of the United States and the world. People in Germany might erroneously think that all of the people in Utah are members of one particular religous group, but that is not the case. But I would not call that misunderstanding "prejudice" but instead merely a lack of demographic understanding.

Hello! Okay, thank you for the replie. I try to phrase more detailed. Regarding the first topic, famous Utahns, you really need to define what you mean by "famous" and "famous for what?" There are a LOT of different areas of human endeavor in which a person can become famous. I'm actually searching for prominent Utahns which my class mates may know. These may either be sportsmen, actors, important historical persons, politicians, singers or inventors whose product/s is known by everone or companies which have their headquater in Utah. Okay, I actually meant something very different. In Germany there are 16 cantons and nearly each of them has their own traditions, holidays and some of them have their own accent. In Wegerg, where I'm coming from, there's an accent called "Plattdeutsch" which is a German influenced by Dutch. So, what about Utah? I think it has to have a special tradition or something similar. Then I wanted to know whether there are prejudices against Utahns. If there isn't even one, you are lucky. Again - in Germany there are lots of stereotypes inside Germany and I think there are a lot of stereotypes against Germans, too. And if I'm watching American television (Simpsons for example), there are a lot of jokes about American cities and states which I can't understand. All of them seem to have a stereotype as a background.

Start with this:
Brigham Young, Mitt Romney, and anyone from the Osmond family.
Mormons are the butt of a lot of jokes. Be sure to be broad in your portrayal of who and what they are, and why they're stereotyped - don't just listen to the negative side of things. Mormon.org is a good place to hear what Mormons believe.
