*sigh* Two goofs (at least) in this week's Radio Dial article in the Dizzy News. If you want to try to spot them, stop reading now.
1) The section of the article dealing with AMs being off the air overnight says "More translator stations than in the past could also be a factor." This makes no sense. There is no such thing as a translator on AM. I interpret this as trying to say that a lot of stations run satellite feeds overnight, but running a satellite feed is NOT being a translator. The term 'translator' is very specific.
2) KCPW is listed as still being on 105.1FM. That translator (and that's where the term should be used) went off the air, what, four or five months ago?
3) I'm not sure if this is a true error, but it's certainly a logic problem. The reference in the ratings list to "ages 18-34 plus" makes no sense. 18-34 plus is equivalent to 18 plus.
I know I should be grateful that there's a radio column at all, but I can't help but wonder whether misinformation is better than no information.

Okay CA....you're right. I think what Lynn was getting at was for instance....800 KSOS simulcasts 1280 KZN. 800 is "sort of " a "translator" for 1280. Technically it's NOT a translator by tech terminology, but it's doing what a translator does. I'm pretty sure this is what he's referring to. Can't vouche for the other boo-boo. Thought when I was dialing around last week while in SLC, I still picked up the KPCW translator. I could be wrong, though. You live down there. I don't. Also....partly personal (as Paul Harvey would say) CA...you sent me an email and I tried to reply to you and I got a message from my server telling me it couldn't go through.....wondering if maybe your "reply-to" address is set incorrectly or something. You might want to email me again and include your addy Thanks Michael n Wyo

KSOS (and KOVO) may be acting in the same fashion as a translator, but we know they aren't. The function of news people (print, magazing, brodcast etc.) is to be knowledgable about the subjects they are speaking about. They are supposed to be informing the public. That's what news is all about. When you have a bush league mistake like this, it sounds like Reporter X heard this cool new word and starts using it to sound like he or she knows everything about whatever the subject is. That might work for a high school paper, but it doesn't work in a major metropolitan newspaper. If you mean "a translator-like station" then say so. Ink isn't that expensive. (I'm not saying I don't make errors myself. I do. However, I'm not doing this as a job and I'm not representing myself as a reporter.) Gotta put the peeve back in the pen. Moving along, there may be another translator for KCPW, but it ain't on 105.1. That's KMXU territory all the way to the north interchange now. As for the email, if it was the one about bandwidth of various stations, the color of the radio and all that, yes it did get through fine. Your server was a little jumpy. I know why and I won't bore you with the details unless you're interested. But thank you for the info. It was very helpful.

Does anyone else laugh at KMDG (should mention KUDD too) being written as KMGD Last paragraph also has some typo's. Sorry Lynn. deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,480034984,00.html

A simple letter transposition I can understand. Some of the other stuff....
Some notes. "Spanish" isn't a format. Who annointed KSL as "The News Authority"? KLVR is in California. The USU translator on 96.7 is gone, isn't it? KWKD simulcasts itself. Neat trick. KMGD hasn't been Mad Dog since 4 months before the supposed revision date. Ditto the KCPW translator on 105.1. The calls for KJQ's 105.1 station are still KMXU.
The Dizzy News is free to steal this list.

The 96.7 translator isn't gone (amazing, I know). I try to listen to it every so often, but I wonder how its been engineered. It's licensed to Ft. Douglas (up on the U. campus) and despite living on the E. side of SLC, I can barely receive it anywhere outside my car (since it's sandwiched between KISN and KXRK).

I don't have that problem, but it seems like depending on where I am I pick up either Kix 96 (KKEX/Preston ID) or KCFM (Levan). Maybe I need to stand on one foot or sacrifice something.

North of SLC its all KKEX for me too. The other night (at night, not daylight hours) I was lost in Taylorsville/West Jordan/Midvale... and you're right, I had KKEX mixing with KUSU's translator, but it was so muddy, no one would have listened. Also out there, VFX did come in at 94.5!
