KJQ makes a good showing this time out. Of course, there was a similar anomoly last spring. Can they hold on?
And what about The Zone? They're on 3 stations with solid coverage from the Idaho border down to central Utah somewhere, and combined they're pulling a 0.8? Man that's gotta hurt. "K-Fan" isn't doing too much better, but at least they consistantly show up in the ratings. As for ESPN 1230, can somebody stop by and turn off the lights?
Actually I'd like to run an experiment. Turn the transmitter for 1230 off and see if anyone notices.

The Sports Zone's ratings kind of confirm what I think alot of people suspected: there's just not a very big audience for sports talk in Salt Lake, and KFAN and the Sports Zone are basically just splitting it between themselves, rather than picking up any new listeners.

www.insideradio.com/ratings.asp Go to this page and pull up the Salt Lake City market. Its interesting to see that KMDG and KRAR get basically nothing in the 12+ book separated from their sister stations.... this list also shows a few more stations than R&R or DSPete's Arbitron list. It does show that KTCE gets decent numbers for only covering down south.... and that all three Spanish stations make the book. Peace.

You know, the problem with the sports station market here in Utah is that we only have one REAL team to support. And their games are being broadcast on a station owned by Larry Miller, which obviously means that every chance you get, you're going to see the Jazz instead of 6 straight episodes of Fraiser.
...Larry Miller, Eagle Killer... Had to toss that one in.
Even more so now, local hockey has been picked up by the UPN station out here, KPNZ. And as for the Stingers, can anyone honestly tell me that they paid for tickets to more than one game last year? As for any other sport, tune into any of the locals on TV, and you get all the information you would have gotten with a sports station... BUT WITH PICTURES!
Overall, we don't have a fanbase for that kind of stuff because all of those bases have been covered, and the rest aren't being paid much attention too. Personally, Id just stick every name on a dart board, pick a company and a station, and leave it as the #1 source in Utah for sports with all the best talent pooled from those three.
...WOAH, I'm not drunk anymore. What was I saying? That stuff would never happen because it actually makes too much sense. Oh well.

. . . (the station) also sounding good, IMO. 'Course I don't listen to the radio until after 10 AM.

The thing with sports stations is that it isn't only the ratings that count. That's the only explanation I can think of.
Example: WFAN in New York came up 14th in the market during the Winter Phase 1 Arbitrends. Last I heard, they were still fighting for the title as #1 billing station in the *country*. Advertisers love the demos that sports stations bring in.

but does salt lake need 3 It's not like we have nhl - nfl here just nba as i recall dspete said something about espn 1230 not to long ago now that is a waste i would rather hear a simulcast of kber or kbee there. why is because company trucks only have am radios in them and there is not much to listen to musically other then radio disney which is a little bit top 40 in a way and old country hopefully a chance with 860 am

No, not three. I could see two (ESPN national on 1230 and either KFNZ or The Zone for local.)

A couple of things with ESPN 1230, First it keeps Dan Patrick on 1320, It gives Citidel the rights to MLB, and NBA covrage done by ESPN, and it doesn't cost them in overhead, espn pays for itself with the national spots run by ESPN, so there is little to no overhead, so it's just another combo for the sales staff to sell.
