Hi guys....had a question. I thought I saw something here and in many other places, that ABC/Disney is indeed purchasing KALL from ClearChannel. And that they plan on moving the Radio Disney format over to KALL. I had a source in Denver tell me that ABC/Disney's goal is to OWN their RadioDisney stations in the top 70 markets, instead of having "affiliates" like 860 is. So it makes a lot of sense. This is true, right? ABC/Disney is buying KALL from CC, right? I had heard that CC will move all the talk to 700 once ABC puts the Radio Disney on KALL. One thing we should hope hope hope for that would be awesome, is that once they put Radio Disney on KALL that they turn the AM Stereo gear back on! In most of the markets where there's a Radio Disney, and especially where ABC/Disney owns the station, there ARE AM Stereo. Cases in point.....Los Angeles...where it was at 710 and recently moved to 1110. When at 710 they were stereo, while the sports on 1110 was mono. When the swap was completed, they actually turned off the stereo at 710, and went through the trouble to make sure and turn ON the AM Stereo equipment at 1110. We KNOW KALL was one of the big time AM Stereo stations. They promoted it and were quite proud of it. So I know the gear is there. Just has to be turned on. I had my friend over there in Denver ask me if anyone has any idea what Citadel plans to do with 860 once ABC moves the RD to KALL. Any clues or ideas?? I think they should pick up the Classic Country format that KWLW is going to drop once the talk moves from KALL to over there.
Am I getting way ahead of myself here? Is this all rumor??? Help me out here, guys. And keep those fingers crossed that if all this comes to pass, that ABC/Disney will indeed turn the AM Stereo back on when they move RD to KALL. Once again AM Stereo may return to the Salt Lake market!

One thing I don't understand about the KALL/KWLW switch is why Clear Channel would dump the classic country format in order to put KALL on 700. If you go to the Radio and Records site and look at the ratings for KALL and KWLW for the period from Fall 2001 to Winter 2003, you'll see that KWLW has had better ratings than KALL in all but two ratings periods. The only reason I can think of for Clear Channel to dump the classic country format is because KALL generates more ad revenue than KWLW. Anyone have any thoughts on this subject?

Wouldn't surprise me. Remember also that the ratings the public sees are 12+. The specific demo breakdown is probably more like KALL getting affluent 18-49ers and KWLW probably skews lower income and higher ages. That my *guess* for the demos.

I dont suppose anyone could just stop mulling over the ratings and broadcast abilities, and maybe look at the obvious?
Why run TWO country formats when you can't even get one right? All kidding aside, the switch to Radio Disney was bound to happen anyway. With Clear Channel owning Channel 4 (who I might remind you all runs ABC programming) it was soon to be a natural occurance for them to bring anything related to Disney under one local roof.
In the end, you have to make a decision. Apply for a new call sign and look like a monopoly, or shrink youreself down to 1 talk radio station, and free up the other one for a new type of audience. As long as you have Soccer-Moms, and 8 year old kids on Ridilin, you'll have Radio Disney listeners.
My, things sound so much easier when you clear out all that "ratings and range" crap.

I don't have any inside knowledge on this, but I always got the impression that CC put classic country on 700 purely as a placeholder until they figured out the longterm plans for the station, then were pleasantly surprised when it starting pulling in decent ratings. I would agree it's probably not the most desirable demo, and since 1370 has the same format, it's not like 700's listeners will be left high and dry. In fact, I wonder if KSOP's decision to start a new format on their AM might have been beacuse of some advance knowledge of KWLW's fate. And frankly, 1370 does the format better, with a deeper playlist (though personally I'd prefer longer music blocks and better DJs).

I agree with ya Yodar. Things look a lot different and clearer when ya look past all the ratings and demo crap. And I agree that Country Joe is doing a lot better job when it comes to REAL Classic Country. I think KWLW is just doing the usual "cookie-cutter" narrow-playlist type stuff. Songs that "Test" well and that kind of stuff. My boss here also own KWSA/KSLL in Price. He's been into Classic country for a LONG time. I've watched him put together several classic country formats. He knows his stuff. He's been in this biz for 30+ years. If you want to talk about REAL classic country.....not just a bunch of #1 ONLY hits from Waylon and Willie and Loretta.... THAT is a real classic country format done right. 1370 is doing a better job, although I agree, it could be executed better. Still, kudos to Country Joe for taking that on. I think he, himself is also a good authority on that kind of music and he would know how to do it right.....music and playlist-wise anyway. After what....20 years?...of simulcasting, he's doing something different with KSOP - AM. Good to see an AM doing something these days beside another stupid talk-news-chatter. Now if we could just get him to go stereo From what I hear, even in the 80s, Joe was never in to AM Stereo. He didn't care and didn't believe in it. He's one of the old-school types that believed "hey, we all grew up on AM and it's always been MONO. That's how it should be. That's how we first heard all of these songs and it should stay that way." My boss...David B Smith is kinda the same way. But I have to admit....the Classic Country we're running here sounds ABSOLUTELY AWESOME in stereo. These old country classics have marvelous stereo separation in them!!! Michael n WYO

I've been listening to KWLW today and noticed that the station is running ads announcing that the "Tunes & Tales From The Town Of Tumbleweed" program will be moving to K102 the first week in April. Maybe this ad indicates that KALL will be moving to 700 AM before the planned switch in June.

. . .pushing k102 on kwlw lately I'm assuming that CC (as any company would) is trying to promote KKAT so that when KWLW bites the dust, its listening audience will tune to KKAT, not KSOP AM (or FM) or KUBL. Keeping listeners is good, losing them (however few/poor) to KSOP AM is bad.

I was just in Utah yesterday and I too heard the promos on KWLW for the "tales from the tumbleweeds" program moving to K102. Also heard a promo for the NASCAR races that will be on K102. Almost sounds to me like they're gonna move the classic country to K102 here soon. Any truth to this?? Meanwhile K102 is saying "your home for today's country AND the classics." I listened for a while and didn't hear any actual "classics" such as merle haggard, tammy wynette, george jones, waylon, willie, loretta lynn, etc...... Hmmmmmmmmmmmm.......
So is it an actual "sale" of KALL to ABC/Disney?? Or is it just an LMA that ABC/Disney is doing from ClearChannel? Anyone know? I'm curious on this because of the "am stereo" issue. To me, I think the chances are better that they'll turn the stereo back on on KALL if they're actually BUYING it from CC. If they're only leasing it, then the ClearChannel engineers will probably do the engineering and it will still fall under CC's anti-am stereo policy. Again.....Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Will keep waiting and checking.

They're straight up selling it. Expect it to move out of the building... in fact, that's probably the only thing that's holding up the format switch, because as I understand it, the deal got approval last week.
I'm not sure that CC has an anti-AM Stereo policy anymore... since Randy Michaels (who hated it) is out of the radio division, and CC has a new corporate engineer. In fact WOKY in Milwaukee is CC... and has a great AM Stereo signal.

I hate it when people take something I say, and just for the sake of argument, they nitpick about the smallest comment. I meant under the Clear Channel company roof, not the actual building!
It's called using "metaphores." Go finish up your Hooked On Phonics lesson for the day and learn what that means.
