Excuse me for not using the correct terms, but it's just easier for people to pick by music choice, instead of technical terms. Leave your thoughts on the subject as well.

I'd like to see a station give the dance format a try it probably won't pull big #'s but I feel it's hard for any new station to pull #'s with all the stations in the 3 city area 1.0 - 1.5 would still be good.

I'll go with dance if it has a wide range and not the same 20 songs KPKK Utah's Party 101.5 ??

I don't know much about dance music, but a station devoted to it sounds interesting. . . after reading a little about "rhthymic oldies" it sounds like a really neat sound too. Wouldn't mind seeing that one return!
I'd still really like to hear something like KWSA here. What a good mix of classic rock and chart toppers from the 80s, 90s, and now. Really innovative and easy to listen to, I thought.

I wasn't much a fan of disco until AFTER they pulled the plug on Fever....rats!
I say they should bring back Jammin' Oldies to somewhere....

I'd love to see a Hot Talk format - especially on FM.
The first guy anyone needs to hire if that came to pass is Brian Shot from KSL. That guy is great and is just being wasted on the weekends there.

My words-eye view. And take it with a grain of salt since I don't actually LIVE in Utah, but I'm really close Hot talk---NO...with KLO, KNRS, and KALL don't you think we have enough talk in SLC? And on FM? Don't think it'll fly. do we too soon forget "106.5 the Score" Dance--maybe, although I think the chr's have got that area covered really well. ZHT, Power1079, KUUU... Jammin Oldies. YES! Well...not that it would work, but that's MY vote. I LOVED Fever. Problem is, in a lot of other markets it works....but didn't really work in Utah. Not enough black people here I guess. I still liked it. it's still DIFFERENT! The Jammin Oldies station in Denver is still around but also had to re-tool their format. Now it's still the same jammin oldies of the 60s and 70s, but now includes the 80s and some 90s jams. So I think the "jammin'" craze is starting to die down. I think KCPX 105.7 had the right idea with trying something different when they tried the "all 70s" format....but it was geared a little too much toward the "rock side" of the 70s. I think mixing all of that along with the disco and pop stuff of the early and mid 70s.....well....that too could be different. I have to agree with SamSpade. And not because I've done a lot of engineering work for these guys, but because I like it too. KWSA in Price (call themselves KUSA-The Eagle) does a pretty good job mixing things together covering 3 decades. Yet it's different. Almost reminds me of the "full service radio" type format. Honestly, I'd like to take a Salt Lake radio station, program it with songs from the 70s to the 90s...maybe even a few currents....call it an A/C station or an MOR station. I think it could work. Why? Because it would be D-I-F-F-E-R-E-N-T! I was in SLC and Ogden yesterday and the FM dial just makes me sick. It is SO boring. SO the same. Everybody's got a conterpart. There are 2 or 3 stations for each format. Okies....back to lurking and playing radio whilst I await a post from some big-city radio dude flaming me for not knowing what I'm talking about because "what could work in a small town doesn't work in the big city" Michael n WYO KEVA-AM / KOTB-FM / KNYN-FM

There already is something like that in SLC. It's called FM 100. Does pretty well, too.

I'd like a new variety station like KISN 97, before it became 97.1 KISS FM and now plays the same stuff as Star 102.7 and others...

As much as I'd like a return of a Jammin Oldies-type station, I don't think it's going to work. The format is all but dead. True there are a few isolated stations still doing something like it, but nothing like there was in the year or so it was The Format. Case in point, the station that started it all (Jammin 105 in NYC) flipped it off a year ago. If the format was going to work ANYWHERE, it would be in NYC.
I'm also still convinced that Millcreek did something funky with the 107.9 signal when they took over. Quick trivia. Who remembers what format was the placeholder on that frequency between the KOSY simulcast and Millcreek buying it?
Next point. Hot talk. That was The Format for a year after Jammin Oldies got old. That didn't exactly burn up the charts, though has a bit more staying power than JO did. I'm surprised it's still going after the "Opie and Anthony" scandal. They're gone, but the format is still there. Is everyone familiar with what they did?

Oops. Forgot what I'd do.....
Michael mentioned that there's a counterpart to every station on the dial. That's almost true, though it depends on exactly where you are. The one format I can think of with a reasonable chance of finding a good audience that isn't duplicated is oldies. In most of the market, Oldies 94.1 has an FM monopoly. Personally, I think they're vulnerable. IMHO, they've gotten too far away from the core of what oldies is and have strayed closer to the 70's KCPX that Michael J referenced. The core 60's oldies are mixed in with the popish 70's stuff. That's great if you like both, but tends to annoy me. (Personal opinion, of course <g>.) The only alternative if you're south of the Weber/Davis line is KXOL, who has their own problems. One, they're on AM, and most AM receivers sound like crap. That's the fault of the manufacterers and pretty much out of our hands. A lot of people don't even pay attention to what's going on on the kHz side of the dial, so that won't change easily. (I mentioned picking up KXNT 840 Las Vegas to my boss and he asked me if I had a satellite receiver to do that. He was surprised you could do that with a regular radio. *sigh*) Second problem (at least for me) is the 'early rock and roll' mixed in with the 'later rock and roll'. I was going to say that if you listen to the station, the rotation is fairly consistant; one 50s/early 60's song followed by a mid 60's/late 60's song, repeat. Throwing in those early tunes makes me want to reach for the tuning buttons. Interesting, but I just flipped it on my lovely $5 radio with a pretty decent AM section (thanks again Michael) and they seem to be running more later material than they were before. Format tweak here? This is encouraging. We'll see.
Anyway, KODJ is running a pretty consistant 4 in the ratings and was 5th in the market for the phase 1 Arbitrends. There's room for another oldies station IMHO, especially if they don't go after it in the same way. Note to Simmons. Just toss the JRN oldies station up on 101.5 for a while instead of leaving it dead. If you want to flip later, just can it. Satellite isn't that hard to run.
