R&R on Friday announced the purchase by Simmons of KADD, a C1 FM licensed to Laughlin NV operating on 93.5 at 2.75kw however, they also have a construction permit to change KADD's city of license to Logandale NV and a power increase to 82kw as a Las Vegas move-in ;D. Purchase price is $8M.

The good news for Utah's Dixie is that it should hit St George with a reasonable signal, according to the signal predictions.
Radio Locator has it listed as the primary for *4* translators licensed to Lake Havasu City, AZ. Oy!

The previous(?) application to sell the station to 3 Point was dismissed Jun 10 and reported today.

I believe the Simmons strategy, which makes good sense to me, is to buy an existing station, or put up a new station and and build the ratings up from nothing in the basement to a solid 2 or 3 share. Watch expenses very carefully, and get a hard charging sales staff to sell the hell out of it. Then pedal the whole thing to a company who thinks they can make it a number one station.
Something that the top brass at Simmons told me they learned running KSFI, was it was much more profitable to build a station to a 3 share and then sell it than it was trying to maintain a #1 rating. The talent costs, promotion expense, and competition from others just made it not as profitable as building and selling.
They (Simmons) are still flush with cash from the sale of KSFI to Bonneville, so we shall see if that becomes their new strategy and business plan. If that's the case it makes sense they would choose a growing market like Las Vegas for a new station.

God I hope that's not true. That's the most depressing business strategy I've ever heard. "We don't want to win. We just want to get rich."

As depressing as it sounds, I don't think that the Simmons Family knows how to do anything else. Craig Hansen is going to be retiring soon, and that leaves a couple of the Simmons kids running the show, and they can barely find the bathroom without a map. Just consider the whole company run by Alan Hague? That should speak volumes.

Is this 104.7 KWLY Moapa? They seem to have upped their power after changing formats a couple of times.

It's not KWLY, but KADD 93.5 Laughlin. They are moving it from Laughlin to the Moapa Valley. Stations rimshotting Vegas from there hit Vegas really well. It's their 'Humphrey's Peak' for all practical purposes.

What format is KADD 93.5 now? 104.7 in Moapa started out a country station, then was a popular Spanish station, then over the summer switched back to country. Which is good because they play better modern and classic country than 95.5 KWNR in Vegas. Did you know why KONY 99.9 St. George is the only country station in Southern Utah? Variety, to me, is better. Also, heard through the grapevine that a radio station wants to come to Mesquite/Beaver Dam... don't know the whole story yet.

Last I heard, it was a crummy sounding Hot-AC format under the old owner. Simmons may keep the format until they move it.
On Mesquite/Beaver Dam, there's KVEG 97.5, which has shaken up the CHR market with a CHR/Rhythmic format that has toppled long-time leader KLUC. There are several CPs outstanding for NCE's including KAIZ (Air1), and anpther new one on I think 88.5. There's also a new CP for just a little further for something on 106.9 that will also rimshot Vegas.
