I drove down today to Blanding, Utah. I have a funeral to attend tomorrow. We think we have it bad on the Wasatch Front with oversaturated Country stations. Out here in rural Southeastern Utah, Country is all I could pick up for about two hours -- other than KZMU, a noncommercial community radio station in Moab, similar to KRCL. www.kzmu.org/index.cfmThey were having a pledge drive, but they were not in the life-or-death "if we don't get two more callers during in the next minute our station will DIE!" mode. Instead, one of the DJs was using his best Transylvanian accent, playing Halloween-themed music in between asking for pledges, and also telling vampire jokes -- "Why did the vampire insist that his girlfriend get a blood test? He wanted to be sure that she was his type." It was actually FUN to listen to despite the begging for money. By the way, the Halloween themed music played was VERY eclectic. Everything from "Monster Mash" to "Werewolves of London" to Rocky Horror's "Time Warp Again."

I'll bet $20 that there weren't any hugely overprice consultants telling them how to run the pledge drive. Good for them.

Wind powered radio! Not just behind the mic.
