I think all three stations did a good job covering this story (sorry Fox 13 but I missed your news at 9 so I can't vouch...)
KUTV had some great time allocated tonight for aftermath and great shots from "Sky 2" of Mesquite, Beaver Dam, and St. George...
Kudos to KTVX for getting a chopper since they don't (to my knowledge) own one...
KSL still did a good job covering, and they've managed to interface radio, tv, and the D. News pretty well.

I think all the stations did a pretty good job covering the flooding. My biggest gripe is with all of them and their graphics. I don't need to be constantly reminded that it is breaking news, especially when the graphic takes up nearly one third of the screen. I also have a problem with Channel 2 displaying their "Live" graphic in the upper left corner over video that is not live. (After seeing the same house fall into the river several times with a "Live" graphic it leaves me wondering what is really live or memorex! Channel 4's use of a chopper was good, but their lack of a gyro mounted camera system can be a bit nausiating. It was a terrible tragedy and a massive story to cover especially since none of the stations have a lot of equipment in the area. To do several live shots took a lot of coordination and for the most part went quite well.

I think Channel 2 put the most assets into the production, gave it the most air time, and probably had the best overall coverage. But some of what they did was overkill, such as having a live reporter located in front of houses in danger of falling into the river, and then having a second live reporter only a few hundred yards away on the back side of the river showing us long lens shots of the backs of the houses that the other reporter was standing in front of. Instead, Channel 2 should have sent its reporters out to other parts of the affected area. Coverage of what was going on in adjacent areas of Arizona and Nevada was almost non-existant. Also, Channel 2's reporters and anchors ofter were from out of state, and thus had perhaps never been in that part of the state prior to being sent down there. I think KSL did a better job of accurately describing what was happening, but Channel 2 definately had the more compelling coverage.

From what I understand, all stations were either banned or unable to get to certain areas. The damage has screwed a lot of people over. I mean hell, one town turned into an island for a day. So it's not surprising that KSL and KUTV were all stationed in St. George and surrounding areas.

I was just shocked watching it all; and glad that the news stations put in such a great effort, and did a good job of showing the state what was going on down there.... a pat-on-the-back to them all.
....But I thought we would see them starting 'help us raise money for the victims (and make us look good/charitable)' promotions.......

SamSpade... Was your comment: "Yellow, KUTV did that." meant in a good way or bad way? I agree that self promotion is a difficult thing to pull off with class...some do it well, some not so much... but helping raise over $100,000 through their (KUTV) telethon for the folks in St. George had to be beyond a promotional tool. Every station in every market tries to highlight their work with charitable events, or they should. It works for everyone, always has, always will. If you're in disagreement with the practices of TV and Radio stations putting forth efforts to help victims of tragic events or the charities trying to help those victims... what should stations do? Nothing? Or should they do something, but not promote it on-air?

As a member and business owner in Beaver Dam, Channel 2 did the most extensive coverage of our area. I didn't get to see much of KSL's coverage on TV, as our power was out. KUTV broadcasted live in front of the store/shop. As you can tell, I like ABC4 but I thought they didn't do enough coverage of all the areas hit. I didn't watch Fox 13 either, but all I have to say is great job to all the stations for providing coverage!

Fox didn't do a lot, but Bob Evans did his best to bring out his old BYU voice and make it sound deadly important.
