I got this news from HR at KSL, so I have to give it some credibility.
Brad Brewer of KPNZ has been fired for embezzlement. The exact date of his terminiation is unkonwn, but this week he applied for a position at KSL and was rejected for these issues. This only confirms reports from late last year of shady accounting practices, but instead of false numbers, it was theft.

Hopefully even with CC running this one now it will be resolved and I hope the loss was not much, and I hope it's recoverable, but this has got to hurt anyway over at Z-24.
It is always hard to put up a 'U' (broadcasting slang for a UHF station) in the first place, as per the history of this one. The first CP was issued in 1985 and the first calls were KUEC. That station was never built apparently, so when the owners who finally built it before selling to CC got it it was clearly a tough go.

So here's a question for you... why isn't this news on the front page? I would assume accounting fraud would be newsworthy around here.

You have to be VERY careful about reporting those kinds of items. If it turned out to be incorrect information, there could be a huge lawsuit that follows. That would be a Thing That Sucks. (Side note. Speaking of the news page, that item about KTPM and KYFO needs to be corrected due to my boo-boo.)

This site is protected by the first amendment for NEWS and the IS a NEWS site, The only thing the First Amendment guarantees is that the government cannot prevent you from publishing. It has no bearing on civil lawsuits.

But for a libel or slander suit to WIN in civil court, the communication in question has to be false. If you are telling the truth, then a lawsuit would fail, due to lack of evidence that a tort was committed. As an example, Consumers Union (the publisher of Consumer Reports) has been sued on numerous occasions, and never lost yet. (Of course, it is true that large companies sometimes sue for slander or libel even though they know they can't win, in the hopes that, facing the huge costs of going to trial, the defendent will agree to agree to stop doing whatever truethful activitity it is that the big company doesn't like; such lawsuits are known as SLAPPs -- Strategic Lawsuits Aginst Public Participation.)

In any case, it should be reported. It's not like they can jump up and deny an employee is fired when there are several ways you can check it out.
He's gone, and probably going to court for theft.

But for a libel or slander suit to WIN in civil court, the communication in question has to be false. Right on all counts. My caution was that the information should be verified as accurate first. Relying on what someone in HR at another station says is a start but hardly confirmation.
