So I was watching the various news activities on thursady with the northern utah flooding and on ABC 4 they were up in a helicopter which I have seen them do before. But this time they actually refered to it as "Chopper 4". So my question is this... is this still just a leased unit or has ABC 4 really got a fulltime bird now? I still think that KUTV uses thier helicopter most effectivly in the local market followed by KSL. Anyways just something I was wondering.

KTVX is leased. I think they realized how badly they got smashed in ratings when the flooding hit Southern Utah, so they leased one for "special occasions." Still doesn't make up for the horrible coverage they did. I watched all day on all three stations for weather reports (I've given up hope on Fox, they work out of a broom closet). Channel 4 ran a special report where their "live shot" was previously recorded. You could see the digital tearing on air. How pathetic.
As far as 2 and 5 go... KUTV gets annoying on occasion, but they do use it effectively. And KSL is just playing catch-up with one that looks like it was built a decade ago. But overall, chopper use in the city is kind of dull considering we have only 2 major highways and a belt route. But then again they're closed half the time, so I could see the reasoning.

IF by digital 'tearing' you meant a little digital breakup, it's possible they were using a satellite truck versus a traditional microwave live vehicle. It would all depend on if Farnsworth Peak was in a line of sight from their location. That kind of thing can happen, even in live shots.

(I've given up hope on Fox, they work out of a broom closet) My Dad works at FOX ( nothing related to news, programming ) and his office.... well it is a broom closet, and he isent the janitor ! Anyways seriously, I apretiate the feedback. That's what i had assummed with KTVX. I think that both KUTV and KSL are getting better with helicopter use. I guess with the weather staying wet we can look forward to alot more use.

Channel 4 doesn't call their chopper "Chopper 4" that would be too close to "Chopper 5". They call their chopper "NewsCopter 4", similar to the ABC affiliate in New York, NewsCopter 7. FOX 13 uses half the same name as KUTV 2 with SkyFox (Sky2). It would be better if ABC4's coverage from the helicopter was steadier , like Sky 2 and Chopper 5's. But oh well. In my opinion, KUTV and KSL over use their choppers. Can you imagine how annoying it would be if you were on the ground at one of their breaking stories with that damn thing hovering above you? In a related note, I am in no way affiliated with KTVX ABC 4. I just like the station, mainly because of Ruth Todd and Randall Carlisle.
