So I read that TV Guide is planning to dump local listings effective in October. Sadly, that's long overdue. Ever since the News Corp people took over, it's been sliding downhill. This should be the final nail in the coffin.

It will be. But the papers don't do much better at listing all the available over-the-air channels, such as 3, 9, 20, 26, 32, 50/51 and 49/66.
I may have missed a couple there.
The cable stuff is getting to be quite cimbersome for them and the papers, and even there they don't take into account new networks that have become more popular over the last few years, and even then only on some evening grids.

In good listings news, at least Yahoo finally fixed the 'favorite channels' section for Encore after the great renaming a few months back so you can have them in your favorites listing again.

Some updates since I last posted on this thread.
Most store clerks I mentioned this to have indicated that if there's no local program listings, people they know say they won't continue to buy TV Guide. Almost all that I know who subscribe that I know do will also drop their subscriptions. So where does that leave them if they go through with it?

I tend to doubt that anybody at News Corp actually thinks this will go anywhere. The name is tainted and those who want Entertainment Weekly probably already subscribe. It would surprise me if the revamped yet again version of TVG lasted more than another 2 years. I wouldn't be surprised if it was gone by fall '06. News Corp has to save face though. It would be really bad PR to admit that they ran a once stellar publication into the ground. If they just folded it, that's what it would look like. At least this way almost nobody will care when the presses run for the last time.
