Hey there,
Any advice on how to DX TV translators? I'm trying to pull in one of KSL's translators and am having no luck.
Thanks!

Translators are just transmitters, so the general TV tips hold true. You want the biggest antenna you can get mounted as high as you can. Also, make sure it's pointed directly toward the transmitter. There are special antennas that are specifically tuned to certain frequencies and might be able to pick a specific channel up better than an all purpose antenna could.

Also depends on where you are if there are none in lets say a 50 miles radius, you probably wont get any

I'm in central Clark County, trying to receive KSL's Logandale translator.

Good point SLC/URN. Didn't think of that. I'll throw another little factoid out there. If you tune to UHF channel 37, I guarantee you will not watch any TV station licensed in the USA. There aren't any. But back on topic. If anyone is interested in the full KSL translator list, it's at web.ksl.com/TV/trans.htm One thing I found is that even though the list doesn't show it, that station is scheduled to move to channel 48. It's currently on 54. You should keep an eye on both to make sure. Also, the coverage area is going to be quite a bit tighter, so it will be harder to see in some directions. That directly impacts you, since you said you're in Clark County. I take it to mean that you're in the Las Vegas metro. The original channel 54 throws some signal your way, but the new channel 48 throws almost nothing. That actually makes sense to me, since all the NBC programming would duplicate what's available on KVBC. I wouldn't hold out a lot of hope, but you can see what you can get with a good roof mounted antenna.

Interesting. Our local cable system doesn't carry KSL. so I'm left wondering what other options there might be. Satellite?

Hey wibbibs, where exactly are you located at in Clark County? I live just outside Mesquite and we pick up KSL on their Santa Clara Translator, Ch. 35. Who is your cable provider? Rio Virgin in Mesquite provides Ch. 4, Ch. 5, Ch. 13 & Ch. 14 on their cable from Salt Lake as well as the Las Vegas channels. I live in Beaver Dam so we don't get Mesquite cable, but if you use satellite I'm not sure you will be able to get KSL either. DirecTV only provides your local channels where you are located (i.e. your locals will be Las Vegas). Dish Network, however, will give you the option of either Salt Lake, Phoenix or Las Vegas, but being your in Central Clark County you might get Las Vegas still. Not sure though.

Seriously, CA? Not even a new HD licensee? Wow. Any reason for that? Inquiring minds want to know... Seriously. It has to do with radio astronomy. I'm a little fuzzy on the details, but there's a specific frequency that's within channel 37's space that equates to one of the numbers involved with a common chemical element (might be hydrogen). Scientists think that this frequency would be a likely one space aliens would use to send out "hi out there" signals. Thus, in order for us to be able to hear such a signal, there can't be anything else nearby on that frequency.

I'm about a mile and a half west of the Strip, just above Flamingo and I-15. What I'm looking for is KSL-TV's local content--newscasts and whatever else. We get their AM signal here at night and before the sun gets too high in the morning (Grant and Amanda on the drive to work), and I'd love to have an alternative to the cheesy, small-market-looking news on KVBC.

A few of their news stories are available on ksl.com. Other than the translator network, the only other thing I can think of is if you have a friend who lives in range of one of their signals and who has a TV tuner card and a fast net connection, you could have them stream the station to you. It's illegal, but I don't think KSL would mind a lot.

They are not illegal (yet) and are for sale right out at any dept store.

As for the legality, I'm 99% sure they're illegal in this circumstance. (IANAL) You are technically retransmitting a TV station without the written consent of that station. That's against the law. There might be some provision for sending from a house you own only to a PC that you own, but that isn't what would be happening here. Assuming that there's some security on the thing the chances of getting caught are extremely small but........
