I tuned in to KJZZ Saturday Evening to watch the Aggies vs. UNLV and WOW... I have never seen a more pathetic broadcast of a sporting event on television.
(I know that many of you are probably saying... "duh")
But I am not exaggerating when I say that I have seen better live productions from American Fork High School Students on "Cave TV".
What is going on over there?

You know, it is in Logan. How much better could it get seeing as how they have limited broadcasting equipment. Now if they were to retrofit the stadium with some decent equipment and a better signal, I'm sure it would have looked better.

Don't be so sure it is the equipment....many times it is the operators of the equipment. Without exaggeration, can either of you give me the details on or specific examples of what made this production amaturish? I'm not involved with the production crew nor did I see the game broadcast but I am interested in the shortcomings of the production.

Any idiot can run the equipment. Remember, KSL and KUTV would hire people off the street up until the late 90's just to run camera.

I know, but I am asking why the production appeared amaturish?? I'm wondering what I missed out on.....!

For those who have Comcast digital cable, the broadcast is available through On Demand. It's free.

I watched the replay on Comcast and although they did have some major audio problems during the first half, it was not all that bad. I have done football games at Utah State and some of the camera positions leave a lot to be desired, but no worse than a lot of stadiums around the country.
As far as the equipment used, there are no stadiums that provide equipment for the broadcasters. The equipment used is in trucks that are built for the purpose of doing remote broadcasts. The trucks that KJZZ uses for football are the same as they use for Jazz games at the Delta Center. Most of them are also used for FOX, ESPN, and other major network sporting events.
The quality of the production rests with KJZZ and the people they hire to do the shows. From what I saw, the graphics looked good, the camerawork was OK (They never missed a play) , and the video was good considering the time of day. I must point out her that doing a game at that time of day is a challenge due to the shadows and color changes that take place. I've seen a lot worse on CBS and NBC on some of their Sunday afternoon football games.
Audio problems can happen....I've seen audio equipment work perfectly before a game, but once the announcers sit down and kick some cables around things can go from good to bad in a hurry. We can dress the cables all we want, but it just takes one pull and we're out of business.
When you're (KJZZ) using a local crew and there are so many events happening in an area the same day it is sometimes hard to get the best at each event. Budget wise it's not practical to travel a crew in like the networks do. A lot of the crew doing KJZZ football also does the Jazz telecasts in addition to many ESPN and other network games. I do have to point out that the normal crew for Jazz games is well known throughout the NBA for being quite good. (KJZZ provides crews for the visiting broadcasters too)
If you have any more questions on Remote telecasts please ask. I do it for a living and would be happy to lend some insight to something most people take for granted!

I'll add this personal opinion. Generally if you notice the work that the crew is doing, they aren't doing their job. It should be transparent. Do you agree RC?

There are exceptions such as specialized cameras, strike zone replays, but on the whole ordinary viewers should not notice anything wrong. Of course, I'm sure none of the readers of this forum are ordinary viewers! ;D

I agree too. But then comes the bigger question. DO they have enough money to pay for a crew that can't be noticed?

College football is big here. KJZZ is a major station here. I'd guess yes.
If you were talking about Z24, I would say maybe not. Nothing against Z24, but they just don't have the budget that K-Jazz does.
