Was browsing through the afternoon news, and I saw KUTV has switched from the gray bars on the sides of their HD signal to black. And not just news, all programming! Usually you can tell when stations like 2 and 4 switch to commercial on HD shows. Now, it all looks the same without any change in the look. It's odd to say, but it's a vast improvement. I can't quite pin the words down, but it looks much better. Does this mean KUTV is ready to start doing HD newscasts? Or were they just fixing their on-air look for the people at home?
Either way, it looks much better. Don't change it back!
Other than that, what does everyone else think of the HD stations? Granted, we only have 5 local ones when you take away stuff like HBO and Showtime. But we do have more than some states. What's everyone's opinion on those stations?

I count 6 local HD signals (2, 4, 5, 7, 11 and 13). Maybe you're watching Comcast; you mentioned HBO. They're free out of the air you know, and probably better quality.
I've noticed that there are a lot of temporary technical problems, especially with 2 and 5 (who also have the most HD programs). They pop in and out of HD all the time in the middle of a program. The phrase "not ready for prime time" comes to mind. And the audio, again especially on 2 and 5, often drops from 5.1 to stereo or to silence. I gets annoying trying to watch HD, but when it's working, it makes standard TV seem like radio. Maybe they'll get the bugs out one day.

Aren't some WB shows in HD or anything on KJZZ? As far as I knew, I thought almost everyone in Utah bought into the 'antenna project' or whatever they called it.

I haven't seen anything in HD on WB. And I'm pretty sure that KJZZ has never put out an HD show. Yes, they are on the "big stick" up on Coon Peak (AKA Farnsworth) and they broadcast in digital SD, but not HD. 13 and 16 are broadcasting digitally, but are not on the big stick. 13 broadcasts with almost zero power.
Speaking of KUWB, they have excellent digital video, as does KSL. 2 and 4 need work. But then their analog video needs work too; maybe that's the origin.

WB. Z24, and KJZZ do not broadcast HD programming. They may have it, but there are no stations for it.

WB does transmit HD programming. I even get it from a Digital Translator on Lewis Peak. It seems to be only when WB is sending the program since the repeats are standard def.
KJZZ doesn't do it yet. Many of the Jazz gmaes are produced in HD because of the production trucks they use, but can't be brodacast that way yet.

That last comment raises something interesting. Are you saying that the translator is doing HD or is it an analog signal?
If it is in digital, then it would probably be the first HD translator known to exist in the state. Also of note, all translator calls that are for HD signals have the suffix D. So, let's say the translator is known as K44AA. if translator K44AA is broadcasting in digital for example and not the old analog signal, then the callsign would be 'K44AA-D'.
Some LPTVs and translators have gone digital in other states, that's how I know this.

The translator is Digital therefore it can be HD. Channels 2, 4, 5, 7, 11, and 30 are available from Lewis Peak although Channel 4 has been off for a month or so. The analog signals are still available. (Not too sure of the technology of this all) Channels 5 and 7 were the first about a year ago to get this going.
KUED has been instrumental in the translator experiments so someone there may have more information. I believe that some of the translators on Quarry Mountain near Park City are also transmitting Digital.

Here's more............. Scanning the digital channels here's what I found from Lewis Peak.
KSL Ch 59 KBYU Ch 60 KUED Ch 61 KUTV Ch 62 KUWB Ch 63
These are digital only transmitters and the analog versions can be found elsewhere.
I could not find these digital channels in any FCC database that I know of. Perhaps it's a test situation.
