As usual, the rhetoric focuses on the children's programming. That's far from all PBS runs. *sigh*
The thing is folks, PBS isn't all that relevant anymore. Children's programming is popping up all over the dial, including commercial ventures that PBS itself is involved in. Documentaries have their own channels. There's more arts and performance on commercial TV than ever before.
The one thing that PBS does that isn't anywhere else yet (AFAIK) is the in-depth serious news like "The Newshour" or "Washington Week in Review." C-SPAN is in the same ballpark, but isn't quite a substitute in my mind.
In tough economic times when the national debt is soaring out of control, I'd rather see that money put to a use that the private sector can't do.

"No child left behind" friend. ;D Perhaps the gap can be filled by awarding a no bid contract To some fine civic minded corporation.
