(Stitch is having login issues, so I'm posting it instead.)
Comcast is raising prices again and I am thinking about a dish. Is there anyone who can give my info about their own dish experience so that I may make an informed decision on whether or not to switch to one.
How does the dish perform in bad weather conditions? Are there alot of hassles with the dish? What are the pitfalls of having a dish? What are the advantages?
Thanks for your input, y'all!

No question, dish is the way to go. I would not do cable. There has to be extreme weather circumstances (really heavy snow) to affect the dish, I have found, and I have never had a problem in having one for two years. The signal quality is much better, too. I am surprised people even waste time with cable when a dish is less expensive and better.

I still have cable, only because we have 6 TV's, and Dish charges extra for each outlet, plus you need extra hardware too. Also, I get a $10 per month discount on my high speed internet if I also have cable. The quality of Comcast cable "should" be better than the low bandwidth satellite digital video, but it isn't. In fact Comcast cable is poor quality video and low RF signal strength. If you only have 1 or 2 TV's, Dish is a much better idea.

I had dish for 5 years and was "forced" to go to comsuck when I moved into a condo. In the 5 years I had 2 service disruptions (in a year with comsuck I've had 6+) due to weather. Unlike cable I was able to address the service issue myself instead of waiting days for a tech. I went outside with broom and dusted the snow off the dish... that simple. With Comsuck I've had issues with paying for channels I didn't want/ didn't order, not getting channels I'm supposed to etc. You can be sure when the contract with Comcast runs out for our Condo in 2013 I'm history. As an aside check out the Qwest website they have some phone, internet and television (via Direct TV) bundled packages that I would get if I wasn't already paying for cable.

I recall reading that Qwest had been approved to provide their own television product in the SLC area. I believe they are already doing in a few areas such as Omaha and Denver and Phoenix. Here is there URL for info www.qwest.com/vdsl/learn/overview.html. So mabey we can start getting some new options in the future.

We have Comcast at home and Dish at the office.... I need Comcast at home to be able to monitor local insert commercials (none of that on Dish....) and we needed DISH to be able to monitor some of the music video nets that comcast doesn't have....
We've gone down WAYYYYYY more often with Comcast than Dish!!! I think we can count on one hand the times the Dish has gone down in SIX years.... Comcast has been down that many times in the past couple of months.... and they always seem to have problems on one net or another.... including the local stations...

To Grim, they CANNOT force you to use cable the FCC has ruled that condo's or even apartments cannot tell you that you cannot have a dish (18") as long as you have a view to the Satellite, nor can any city or community or neighborhood group...PERIOD It was believed to be an unfair to advantage to cable
Comcast are LIARS AND THIEVES, PLAIN AND SIMPLE
They lie about dish problems and they WAAAAY overcharge and they make backroom deals that hurt the consumer, ask channel 4 why they allow Comcast to have their 4.2 and not dish? backroom deal maybe??
Dish Network has been great to me I have had them since 1998

Unfortunately the Home Owners Association for the condo recieves the bill and is paid for through the monthly HOA****sment and I **have** to pay that. Equally unfortunate the developer/builder signed a 10 year contract for Comcast to provide their "service."
So, technically I "could" get a dish but I would be paying for both services. I've been very close on a number of occasions.

Comcast is doing a big push now... sales people are looking on rooftops poles ect.. for Dishes. They spotted mine and told me to trade in my Directv system for Comcast and they will give me the ToP digital package + DVR free and will charge me $29.99 per month for 12 months. My reply No Thanks... It looks like a great package.. Now if it included Internet service and the top digital package for $29.99 My reply might have been ok...

dspete, the question is after Comcast's $29.99 for 12 months deal ends, will it then go back to its normal $50 or $60 or whatever they charge that is too high?

29.99 then after 12 months the price for the Digital Gold package ready for this.....$90.50 a month
Looks like the Gold is just about everything. But they wanted my Directv equipment to do this...

Yeah, Boyeeeeeeee! I'm back on this board! Uh-oh, I've been watchin' way to much Flavor Flav Thanks for the info, everyone... Can you tell me more about the extra hardware needed if you have more than one tv and give me some ideas on how much the extras might cost? How about installation and dish service calls. Will getting the dish mess up any of TiVo, stereo connections etc? (It shouldn't. I just want to know). Are service calls free? Do techs come out right away or do you have to wait a week? I, too, have had many Comcast service calls and am glad that the dish may be more reliable. Yeah, $90+ is way to much for cable in my opinion, that's why I want to check out the dish. A friend, who bought a condo several years ago, told me that the condo was having a meeting because you could only have a dish on a certain side of the complex and if you didn't live on that side of the building, you were S O L. Does that sound right? Thanks for the link, Wally and the C-Band info BlowmeupTom.. I'm checkin' it all out! Thanks again for posting this for me, CA. You're AWESOME!

A friend, who bought a condo several years ago, told me that the condo was having a meeting because you could only have a dish on a certain side of the complex and if you didn't live on that side of the building, you were S O L. Does that sound right? Depends on the rules, but likely yes. You can put up an antenna in your private area, but if you don't have a southern view (southeast from this longitude, I believe) you'll just be staring at empty space.
