I DXed KDJQ 890 from the Boise area tonight. At just after sunset it was coming in strong enough to stop a car radio scan. At first I was thinking it was KDXU, except that it was playing old oldies. (When was the last time you hear "Rock Around the Clock" on the radio?) Right at 9:30 the signal fell off the table and then I got KDXU. Is the oldies format there new? Radio Locator says it's Spanish.

Radio Locator says it's Spanish. I'd say Radio Locator needs to do some updating. According to a May 14th entry on the Idaho Radio News site, KDJQ switched back to the oldies format early in May 2006. Apparently the Spanish format wasn't much of a success. I don't think it lasted more than six months at best. When I caught KDJQ during the day last week on an "ancient" GE Long Range AM portable (another $15.00 eBay treasure), the station was promoting its wide variety of oldies and advertising T-shirts with the station logo. More comments about the format flip can be read at the Idaho Radio News site. By the way, you probably lost the signal at 9:30 because the station drops from 50,000 watts day power to a measly 250 watts at night.

Oops. Yes, I meant to mention the lowering of power as a confirmation that it was KDJQ. (Side note, the day and night TX sites are in completely different locations per the FCC info.) Thanks David.

When 104.3 Kool Oldies went country a few months earlier (Boise now has 6 country signals) it opend the door again for that format. And, KDJQ's owner's passion is the oldies.
