One of the big hot button topics over the last couple of days is the idea of allowing FM translators to rebroadcast AM stations. In addition to the truths that are stated on the main news page, there's another issue that I think is the bigger one. This is an effort by the big broadcasters to allow more "FM stations" in a market than otherwise would be allowed. The classic case is the AM underperforming or rimshot station. Take KUTR for example. For 99% of the public, that station would sound better on FM, right? So what do you do? Take a Salt Lake translator (several I'm sure will be approved sooner or later) and rebroadcast the KUTR IBOC signal from either Farnsworth or Ensign. That meets the criteria. Then you start treating the AM signal as a really expensive STL for the translator that you'll be promoting. Watch the prices of AM stations skyrocket.
The NAB guys may be shifty, but they ain't dumb.
