Since it was mentioned, let's talk about it.
Ok, so OJ is trying to make some money. That in and of itself doesn't bother me. What DOES bother me is the way he's trying to make money. Just when you thought American culture was as low as it could go, somebody grabs a shovel. And make no mistake, OJ is hip deep now.
Background first: I did see quite a bit of the criminal trial back some 11 years ago partially out of curiosity and partly as an occupational hazard. From what I saw, based on the evidence, he wasn't guilty *beyond a reasonable doubt*. That's the burden of proof needed in a criminal trial. I think the jury got it right. The burden is much less in a civil trial, and I think that jury may very well have gotten it right too. Odd how that works. I do think that OJ got railroaded by the press during the civil trial, and for that I felt bad for him. I didn't pay much attention to the civil matter, so I had no real opinion there.
So now we jump forward to the book/TV deal that he's hawking. The only possible justification I can think of for such a tasteless and crass action is that he's so desperate for money that the alternative would be for him to go on food stamps. Somehow I doubt that's the case. I could think of lots of possibilities for him. One right off the top of my head; you've heard of those murder mystery cruises, right? Have him on one of those where he's a detective working to solve a murder mystery and the guests try to help him. Talk about playing against type.....
But I digress. For him to try to capitalize on something so gruesome is almost unfathomable. Granted Ron Goldman's father has been milking that cow for years too, but that's not right either. Simpson's got him trumped on this one though. This is the kind of thing that Saturday Night Live would invent as a sketch, not the kind of thing that happens in real life. I hope the book sales and the Fox special tank bigtime. Sadly, I'll bet Robert Blake is watching and going "why didn't I think of that?"
