Where's the translator that is throwing its signal into Salt Lake City that is rebroadcasting KBYU-TV?
It's on channel 6, and I picked up the audio around 54th South 40th West today. I looked at the FCC site and find two translators, one just east of Wanship, the tower is not that far east of town, and another one with the tower right by the I-80/I-84 junction that is supposed to serve Henefer, but doesn't even really hit the target, in fact, it only covers the slot canyon that is between Henefer and the interchange.
Given where I heard it, it could be the Wanship one, but that also means since the Wanship one does not appear to be directional, that it could also be walking on the Henefer translator.
What is the source then of the KBYU-TV audio on 6?

I checked every station licensed in Utah within 180 miles of Salt Lake and none of them are listed to translate KBYU. There's only one that doesn't have a parent station listed, but that's out in Vernal.
Are you sure it wasn't some weird harmonic in your radio? You were pretty close to the general area where the translators are.
