So KUTV has now gone down the HD road, and is doing their news in HD now. I think it looks ok. It would look a lot better if they would switch out all their remote cameras, so their on-location reporters were in HD. The big thing I notice is their audio. KUTV's audio compared to KSL sounds like crap!! They really need some kind of audio processing for everything. I think KSL sounds and looks the best out of the two.
I'm wondering when FOX and KTVX are going to follow suit and do their news in HD?

We're lucky that KTVX broadcasts in color.

Random junk I'm aware of.
KSL's HD is fake HD. For those of you unaware of it, they don't have an HD switcher for their production room yet. All that fancy HD you're watching? It's being done with widescreen view. I'm sure the church prayed to the holy spirit above for the equipment so they can go a step above Channel 2 before 2009. Of course, KSL would be a much better station if they'd cut the crap and just air everything NBC had to offer. I'm surprised they didn't get to take all the SNL specials off the air this year and replace them with "Little House" films. I know a lot of people who were pissed with "Poker After Dark" wasn't being aired.
Channel 2's audio has always been terrible. No matter what affiliate they are, no matter where they were located. But you can hear it. So I think as far as they're concerned, it's not a problem until it's squacking. I think they're slowly buying cameras and the studio ones were the first to come in. Who knows when every camera will be HD. They just barely got their act in gear with it, so expect the process to be slow.
KTVX will probably not go HD until the new ownership takes over (by hook or by crook) and are forced to update the station to sell them off. I think 4 could be a decent force in Utah if they'd just get their programming together and find a format that was original. Drop the "close to home" crap, move somewhere other than the side of the highway, make an effort to be a force rather than a friend. I know they can't help what ABC does, but that's only 20% of their grid. They could do so much more and they choose not to.
KSTU will probably be neck and neck with KJZZ on making the jump to HD. I know they got the Jazz games, but that's not everything they show. All sports should be in HD, not just what you and KUTV decide should be in HD. But I think once Fox goes HD, a small portion of the audience will shift their way. It's sad and depressing, but they've got the hot hand with American Idol. If it weren't for that show, they'd just be praying the Simpsons doesn't end or Family Guy gets canceled a second time. But they're in flux right now, so who knows.
I'm surprised no one comments on KUED or KBYU having all that PBS HD material at their disposal. Some of those shows look fantastic. I'm shocked RC Willey doesn't use them as a display for their electronics division.

Actually, KSL's news is in real HD now, at least the in-studio cameras. Has been for a few weeks now.

Hmm. Funny how they didn't feel they needed to do that until someone else actually up their game. I wouldn't really care, except I take offense to stations trying to pull a fast one over people. We're HD! No, you're not. Well... we fill the picture! Yeah, that's cute, oh look, someone else is in real HD. Really? Ummm... look, we're in real HD now! Did I mention that the day AFTER Channel 2 started their HD campaign, KSL did a story about how "the (HD) picture quality isn't much better than normal programming." Seriously. After trumpeting for almost a year that HD was the way to be, they do this the day after their competition get in the game, with the expert testimony of a BestBuy employee, a couple public relations people, and some random dude with an Xbox. Don't believe me? Click over here. www.ksl.com/?nid=148&sid=3168740Seriously, how much of a double standard can you set in broadcasting?

If it's done well, there's no question that HD is better. I still vividly remember my first experience with a "real" HD set. It was a demo in Best Buy of a fish tank. I had to get about 3 inches away from the tube to tell it wasn't really a fish tank in a TV set case. THAT was the day I became a believer. Before that, I had only seen....let's say "stuff that didn't show the potential".

A couple of things I know from friends who work at the various stations......
KUTV has had the studio HD cameras for several years...since they moved.to the Wells Fargo location What they didn't have was the infrastructure to switch them on the air. It's a huge conversion process.
HD Cameras aren't something you can just buy off the shelf. KSL had the cameras on order at least since the first of the year. They have been working on the internal routing system for some time now. The Field stuff is mostly Standard Defination but it's 16X9 and Digital so it does look better.
KTVX and color....if you want to see great HD color, check out the NBA finals starting tonight. I think you will be impressed.

RC Video said, "HD Cameras aren't something you can just buy off the shelf."
Actually, RC, yeah, they are. You can buy some brand-new ones for as low as $800 or even less. But it's the ones that the big broadcasters tend to use that cost many grands more than that. Ya have ta be a bit more specific.
