KUTV has been my favorite news station for several years now (ever since they moved downtown) but over the last quarter or so the quality of the news 9:00 newscast on KJZZ and the 10:00 on 2 has been awful. I think one of my biggest gripes is the whole newscast is sloppy. It is almost daily where a story isn't queued and the anchor and reporter are sitting there with the old deer in the headlights look. Or they will run the wrong story all together, or have the wrong graphic on the HD screen behind them. The production isn't tight. The flow from story to story is often choppy too. It's just seeems amatuerish. And there's very little if any national news in most newscasts.
I hate to say it because I hate the information filter and decidedly right wing/mormon slant to the news at KSL, but KSL is getting more and more of my viewership because KUTV can't get their act together.
KSL's production quality seems tight by comparison, they bang through a lot of news during the 20 minutes without being weighed down by a lot of Mark Koebel's plastic "captain obvious" chit chat.
Come on KUTV bring me back, tighten it up, stop being so sloppy.
Has anyone else noticed this?

Hey, Grim-
My frustration with KSL's morning schtick is they can never, NEVER, get a clean break between network weather seg and the local cut-in. It's just bizarre. I can't watch Al Roker anyway, but when he says"And now, here's the weather in your neck of the woods,"and you get Grant Wayman running to do the cut-in like he was in the men's room when the cut-in came, or, you get dead silence and you're treated to a national weather map and Roker babbling and laughing in the background.
It's like a high school broadcast. I can't imagine that Master Control doesn't get heat for this sloppiness from Con Psarras, the news director. The have a timing sheet, a running clock, a program break-down and the whole show is pre-recorded. WTF??
Yesterday morning, I was flipping back and forth between 2 and 5, depending on who's annoying me the most, and the national network weather map was up. Roker threw it to local and all you heard for the 10 sec cut-in was Al Roker joking with the idiots who show up with signs that say thing like,"Butter...Good!" or "We was born in a barn in Iowa!"

OK i noticed they do need to improve. i took TV productions in college the production team (tech director, director, producers even executive producer) and field talent not the anchors has screwed up. production by not doing their job right with newscasts and having too many of them on too many networks. field talent by choosing wrong story's. i don't blame the main anchors they only read off the teleprompter. they only screw up on the segments in the studio at times so blame production and field reporters/talent.

I don't get to watch the morning news often but I like the KUTV team and if ever I'm home in the AM they get my eye .
Last night Mark Koebel kept talking over **** Lake and making her cut up so much that she couldn't even read the teleprompter.
Most of my gripes are with the production staff. How hard is it to play the correct story and on time?
They had better get this stuff cleaned up before sweeps.
ETA MODS: Could you PLEASE remove the asinine filter for S H A W N A? Isn't the thought nazi that implemented that gone now?

Well, if we're talkin' screw ups, Bruce Lindsey and Nadine Wimma (I know, Wimmer) threw it to a location live shot in Farmington last night where they just weren't ready yet. Hell, they hadn't even mic'd the sheriff in Farmington, so we got treated to a shrunken shot of B & W and watched a young woman doing Location Audio Prep 101 while she hurriedly mic'd the poor sheriff, who looked like he was being prepped for surgery. All the while, the only audio was reporters screwing around, Channel Two's reporter walked back and forth in front of the live shot, and B & W were sitting dead still, dead silent in their minimized screen shot. It took about 30 seconds of dead air before the press conference began. I started to squirm, yelling at Master Control (why can't they hear me?) and punched out to Comedy Central.
They actually could have gone to a commercial break, it was that long.

If I may point out, the quickest way to get the attention of the stations is to simply stop watching. In the time it takes to write a "review" of the newscast on this board, you can get all of the news stories that are reported from either of these stations mediocre websites.
It was about a year ago when I decided enough was enough with channel 2's morning zoo-cast. Not that I don't love watching two grown men building crafts at a hobby shop, Ron Bird's wig, and pretend weather ladies, but I suppose real news is more what I'm looking for these days.
Don't get me wrong, it could be worse. You could be watching Fox 13's piece on the Legacy Highway where they pan across a field of dairy cows as they talk about the beautiful view of Utah's "wildlife".

It's not enough to simply stop watching. I've worked in television my whole adult life. I have members of my immediate family who are well-known new photogs and producers. Emmy winners.
When it's in your veins and you've worked for all but KTVX in this market, you don't simply stop watching. You get on the phone or email and let someone know that you noticed their incompetence, their preening for the camera, their total lack of knowledge on a subject they were assigned to cover, and most importantly, their lack of true journalistic ethics and performance.
And to behold Marti Skold's outfit last Thursday night on an accidental Channel 4 tuning malfunction is a thing of breathtaking inappropriate-ness. I'll give her a break and say that she had to play Queen of the Riverdale Rodeo when she got off the air that night.
But I actually think she meant to wear that tan and black thing that looked like it came from a thrift store in Austin to do the weather.
