The other day, I had a flashback to my childhood, when it was relatively common for a tv station to have a protacted period in which there was something wrong with their broadcast -- no sound, loss of network feed, etc. Since television sets back then also tended to be unreliable, stations usually ran audio or text messages to assure their viewers that the problem was at the station's end instead of with the television set.
But why did the stations all seem to use very nearly the same stock phrases, such as "Please Stand By." It all sounds like the stations were reading from the same scripts -- scripts written by engineers. Surely someone would have chosen to use a less geeky phrase if they had had the freedom to do so, wouldn't they?
Anyhow, I was just thinking how it has been AGES (probably several years) since I have seen a station so messed up that they resorted to showing their station logo static image. I know that there is a special jargonish name for that static image, but I can't recall what it is. Help me out.

Would the word you be thinking of be "slate"? Or "camera card"?
