Ok. Riddle me this, Batman.
Community Wireless of Park City takes over KIQN. Ok. But why would they want to change the license from commercial to non-commercial? There must be a reason, but I can't think of what it is. Going the other way (non-comm to comm) woul dbe necessarity for a commercial entity to run spots, but this is puzzling me. Can someone clue me in?

CW of PC is a non-commercial entity? I would suppose that is the reason. They work just like any other NPR station, relying on contributions from listeners to purchase programming and pay salaries. (although their trade-out system is unique)
So, whatever they program the station with (KRCL competition? repeater for KCPW?) it probably would be non-commercial.

Which brings a non-commercial news/talk competitor into a larger listening area- doesn't seem like more competition for KUER and KSL would be a bad thing to me. ;D

I haven't heard it, but their other station KPCW might make more sense. They have no real coverage in Weber, Davis, SL and Utah Counties.

This is true, but that would probably change the role of the station. It plays some of the same content of KCPW, but also a Triple A music playlist with volunteers. It IS Park City's station. I know people that live up that way, and it is what the people in Summit County tune to on a daily basis. People don't really try to get SLC radio. I guess they could want to extend the coverage for their listeners when they visit the valley or something. Guess we'll have to wait and see!

Community Wireless of Park City takes over KIQN. Ok. But why would they want to change the license from commercial to non-commercial? I think we have an answer. From Lynn Arave's column this week: "Because it would operate as a nonprofit station, the FCC granted AM-1010 an exemption from the current station ownership transfer process, which was frozen earlier this month when the FCC altered its ownership rules."

I am going to guess that Community Wireless is going to put NPR news ( Morning Edition, All Things Considered, etc.) and feature programming on KIQN. You don't need FM stereo for a mono newscast.

One can ALWAYS use AM Stereo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Unfortunately KC7, KCPW is also in mono. So, unless they go with the same format as KPCW or something music-based, I doubt AM stereo will happen (especially if the equipment is not there) For more on this story (including the former owner creating a stink, yet again) see deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,510033989,00.html

AM stereo would indeed be neat!! KIQN is the last station I'd expect it from, though. KPCW and KCPW aren't even stereo. They're mono. Have been for quite a few years now, although I DO remember when they were stereo probably 6 or 7 years ago. I'm wondering and guessing if they shut if off to maybe please more folks trying to listen in the outlying areas in between mountains. In FM MONO you get lots less multi-pathing and interference and static. So maybe it gets them "in" better in those cracks and crevices and canyons around all the moutains and areas in and around Park City. So it's obvious they don't care about stereo on their FM, so why would they care about stereo on their AM? I've had pretty good luck finding AM Stereo exciters. If there was a station in the valley that wanted to go stereo, I could probably find an exciter for them, especially considering that so many of them already have the stereo processing from when they were stereo some years ago. Too bad nobody wants to turn it on. I think KWDZ 910 would be the perfect candidate. I guess that is unless ClearChannel replaced the stereo processing a few years ago when they bought it and dropped the stereo. I wouldn't put it past ClearChannel to pull out stereo processing and replace it with something that can make them nice and L O U D! Clearchannel. We are LOUD. And the main excuse these days is that there are no radios (false) and that "well we'll be stereo again really soon. Digital AM is coming ya know!" Yeah RIGHT! IBOCrap. No thanks.
