OK, 'Once upon a time there was a radio station, 'The End'. Now we can say 'The End' to 'The End'.
Last song played, 'Stand' by REM. Two shorter things including the intro to Beck's 'Loser'. Then an all-new ID, didn't hear whether they kept the calls, something screwed up in the right channel where that was all towards. Then 'Bust a Move' by Young MC. Something about 'Gen-X'.
Basically, a major format switch for another heritage station. Younger skewing format, heard about similar things on national radio. They haven't finished 'Bust a Move', so I'm not sure if this will be another robo-station or not.
'Music for Generation X, The New 101-9' is the positioner. Next song, one by Collective Soul. Appears that they are going after KJMY here.

X96 has played "Loser" by Beck nearly 5,000 times (by my estimate) since it was released in 1993. It never went away. What reason do I have to tune in to yet one more boring shuffle station playing stuff I was sick of more than 10 years ago? I have my own iPod, and I don't have to sit through 15 minutes of jewelry store commercials when I want to listen to it.
Why won't some station in this city try something innovative and program something interesting and new, as in, music released in the last 5 years? There is a lot of good stuff coming out now and it gets zero airplay. It's frustration to No End. (Ugh, terrible pun, sorry).

Right now the website www.1019theend.com still works, but the old stuff is completely gone, and the new logo is front nad center. '101.9 FM Salt Lake City Gen-X Music', and a listen live (web stream) link and that's all. The background looks sort of like a messed-up QR code, you know, the square barcodes said to be seen used on UPS packages, or shortcuts to the Android Market, etc., thus adding to the mystery as to what this is all going to be about. Like I say I have come across stations flipping to this across the country, but like Jack stations, they are all different, and this really could be another type of station like that.

I was shocked when I got into the car to come home only to find out that M&M was playing on my favorite station. I thought someone was playing a joke on me. When I heard the first bumper and that the target audience was "gen-x" I knew one thing: I'll be dropping 101.9 from my Tier 1 pre-set on my car radio.

By 'M&M', did you mean the group that had that one-hit thing with 'Black Stations, White Stations' back in 1984 or so? Haven't heard that one since I was doing gofer work at KXCI/Tucson that year, would see the video on WTBS all the time on their Friday night video show..

Well, it is here to stay. I just read an article about this new format on radioinsite.com. As of 3:07 April 20th the station changed to the new format. Clear Channel launched this format in Louisville last year. I am not sure what to think of the station yet. Give me a few days and I will tell you. Is sounds promissing though. But let's not make a judgement call yet.

Just so you all know, I did hear the top of the hour ID just a few seconds ago. They are still going by the call sign KENZ.

The End largely floundered in the market for several years, so this format change probably won't hurt or help it much. Remember former Chunga show sidekick Chelsea? She decided to get out of the business and left the show in December. How wise does she look today? Maybe she had an inkling something was up.

No I probably got the rapper's stage name wrong. The one that did the 8 mile movie. I'm not a big rap fan and the only way I knew it was him was from the Weird Al parody song.

Sounds like a pretty interesting station. Too bad folks up north in Cache County won't be able to listen. 101.9 comes in almost crystal clear up there, but cache valley radio group recently decided to put KVNU on their second signal: 102.1 now all you can hear is KVNU bleeding on 101.9

Yawn.
It's just another of the industry's short-term solutions to a long-term problem for radio. It'll be around for a year or so then something new. Who cares? Listeners won't because radio doesn't give them a reason to care.
Sigh...

KENZ was gaining in the ratings since PPM became currency, including the March book just released today. The link, etc., is in a separate post.
