The PPMs taken in the month of August are out. www.radio-info.com/site/markets/grid/salt-lake-cityKXRK gains more than a point and is now at 8.3, up from 7 last month. KBZN is now more popular in cume than KSL. KSL continues to slide although the losses are less this month versus the last three. Nearly all the Logan stations now have shown up, the latest to show at all is KLZX. Only KUSU has not shown. The reason they do is because of the boosters in Ogden, and KLZX hits in there good on its own. KNRS/KJMY-HD2 shows due to the translator. No other HD2/3 shows in the market. KSL Stream does with a .2 . I've heard anecdotally of Mormon Channel (KSL-FM HD2) also scoring hits on Arbitron, but it may be only either/both specific dayparts or demos. KNRS is showing some gains in both AQH and cume. We won't know until November the impact on either KSL or KNRS due to Sean Hannity's move, as it will show when they release the numbers for October in November, and it may take a few months past that for the dust to settle there. KKAT-FM is still doing well although both the AQH and cume are slightly off. I would note that there is no indication that PPM is picking up KNKL, I think EMF has not encoded that or the Air1 translator on 89.7. 88.7 is not indicated although I checked the station and heard a 107.5 legal ID and they mention 88.7. I consider the numbers shown to be inaccurate regarding the simulcast, and if known it could raise the actual number somewhat, like into the 1.0 or higher range for the two combined.

KBZN (Now 97.9) in the Top 10? You're kidding me? How can a radio station that might as well be playing burping and farting noises actually have 400,000 listeners? The announcers are old, the playlist is extremely tight and they ventured into a format that was already overcrowded and in which they had no practical experience. If you recall, that was the analysis from some goofball blogger shortly after KBZN changed from smooth jazz to the current format. Terrific observations. So, Now 97.9 has outdone three direct competitors in just over a year and has had their best billing year ever. Seems like they might know what they're doing. Granted, things rapidly change in radio...but for the time being Now 97.9 is a player.

Goofball blogger huh? I'm not sure if it was me or another poster you refer to, but I share all those criticisms of KBZN. Whatever the ratings, the criticisms are still legitimate. I don't think "they know what they're doing". They dumped a niche format and copied what many other stations were already doing, and hoped for the best. I think most people could figure that one out. You credit them with too much brain power. As for KBZN now, congratulations on rising above the heap of cow dung, at least for one month. But it's a hollow victory, as with each passing day, terrestrial radio becomes more and more of a dated, unoriginal wasteland.

Well, you're partly right. The radio landscape is bleak right now. Personally, I can't find a radio station I like...one that I automatically turn to for my favorite music. The public stations come closest but a few of the commercial stations catch my interest from time to time. Overall, I spend more time with my CDs.
But my point--my only point--is that everybody's thin predictions for the non-success of KBZN were wrong...including yours.

Lately I've been streaming a LOT of KFI in Los Angeles. I dunno if that's a sign of the SLC radio landscape, or if I'm just getting older.

Those who can do, those who can't predict and post.

Thank goodness there is nothing I really like. Seems to be the kiss of death. Have been streaming The Don Geronimo Show from KHTK in Sacramento... guy talk and fart sounds. Surrounded by sports programming.

I still can't believe X96 is #1 in this city.... inexplicable.
I know most people here are not interested in non-commercial radio, but wasn't KRCL under some kind of deadline from the CPB to increase their ratings or lose their federal funding? Their numbers seem to be fairly flat since the PPM system started. Meanwhile, the NPR affiliate, KCPW, seems to be circling the drain. It will be interesting to see how much longer these two might be around.

Those who can do, those who can't predict and post. And those who can't predict and post, end up at KSL.

Once it becomes so completely boring, and the audience dries up, maybe the media companies will move on to their next big failure and leave a few frequencies on the dial for people who want to do something interesting with music or talk.
