This is directly from the RAIN (Radio and Internet Newsletter) blog, was posted during a meeting they held during the RAB conference, but which was not part of that directly. Very interesting, including some interesting stats about ksl.com.
REESE: RADIO SHOULD INVEST MORE IN DIGITAL
Bonneville president/CEO Bruce Reese delivered the first keynote of RAIN Summit East — perhaps one of the best keynotes ever presented at a RAIN Summit. He argued that radio needs to invest more in digital. “We’ve got to invest,” he said, “we’ve run historically at such great margins, we’ve been reluctant to knock a point or two off it to invest.”
That said, Reese is hesitant that “streaming by itself” is a big moneymaker for Bonneville, but thinks it may be a good way to “be a part of the music discovery process.” Plus, Reese said radio has a leg-up on the Internet giants because “we have the opportunity to talk to huge audiences” over the air and already have connections with local advertisers.
He also shared some stats about Bonneville’s KSL.com site, including that it receives 215 million page views and 3.7 million unique users per month. It’s a local site for Salt Lake City (a metro area with 1.8 million people) and Reese said it’s one of the most viewed local websites in the nation. Though the site now offers local news, traffic, weather and more, it originally only focused on classifieds. As that was before Craigslist arrived, it became very popular and still is today.
