Bonneville is giving up on the Female Talk experiment. The press release is on the KUTR website, and is kinda funny. It proves that Chris Redgrave is an idiot. This will be the third station to have the KUTR calls and a similar format.
The first KUTR was a flip from soft-AC by then-simulcast KLTQ-AM/FM. KLTQ would become KLZX 'Z-93' later on. The original KUTR signed on in July 1985 after the completion of a night upgrade so they could broadcast 24/7.
That lasted four years. They went off the air June 1989, 860 became a simulcast of Z-93. Although the ratings weren't much, there was still an outcry and the owners of 1320 who were using call letters associated with a then recently failed B/EZ styled format picked it up in August only weeks later.
That lasted until early 1992, 1320 began to simulcast 98.7 and has since gone through several formats as well, are presently KFNZ.
Now it is unclear whether they will find the old jingle package and use it for this as well. The old 'Sounds like Utah' package is the one I'm talking about.
But some here were speculating on an LDS format back when Simmons first took the KUTR calls for this station, and the speculation got stronger when Bonneville bought the CP. Then some wondered if there would be a format flip to help promote the FM-100 HD2 streaming. I am not sure if this is the case, but that is probably one reason.
Someone said the 'Soft Sunday Sounds' program got four times the weekday ratings for FM-100. But hearing here that KBZN had the top Sunday evening ratings I'm not sure. However, KBZN just jumped the shark on their Sunday shows by cutting Art Good's 'Jazz Trax' back to running only two hours of it. Very few stations in his network are doing less than the four or five hour show.

From the way the press release is written, the displaced AM820 shows would end up on both 1160 & 102.7. That just doesn't make sense. What would KSL be cutting? Doug Wright? The noon news? Hannity? I just don't see that happening.
I'd be more inclined to see less simulcast, but that raises more questions. Why put talk on FM and music on AM? That's dumb. As Monstro said, the music should be on an FM. Since this will be (presumably) the same format that KSFI HD2 is running, then the duplication of 100.3-HD2 and 102.7-HD1/analog doesn't make sense. Ok, so drop the 100.3 HD2. Then you have to figure out what to replace that with. Maybe a digital simulcast of 820??
Nothing about this is making sense to me right now.

My first thought was that the programs would run on the weekends... Hadn't thought of that. Possible I suppose, but weekends are usually the doldrums of talk radio. If they weren't getting any significant ratings before, why would that change now? I guess we just wait and see. |

It's on and sounds quite good. The same playlist as the FM-100 Sunday show but with a few more songs. Not that many more yet, but I think they would want to add more to keep it fresh.
I just witnessed their first good goof as well. And they will continue to run Paul Harvey News and Comment. That's not the goof. Here's what happened--Paul Harvey ran early, then they ran a Michael McLean and a Michael W. Smith song. Then the Paul Harvey newscast ran again after a TOH ID, then the same two songs again.
They are using some of the old AM-820 liners, same person doing the voiceovers, and some new liners also with that same person doing the voiceovers. They will not be using the old 'Sounds Like Utah' liners used on the first two KUTR incarnations. The station will be jockless, like the LDS web stations are doing right now. Those are KZION.com, BYURadio, and the forthcoming KBYR 91.5 Rexburg stream.
So it also looks like Kurt Bestor and Rebecca Cressman are probably looking for work. Ironically, the new format probably plays some of Kurt's musical work regularly.

There's more, I just heard ABC News at 9am, so it looks like they are from time to time if not every hour going to run TOH news as well as the Paul Harvey items.
One complaint is the playlist is still too tight. People will get tired of this real fast unless they find the rest of the LDS music that fits their format and is high-enough quality. There's more out there, and they will need to get more of it on. Sounds like about a 100-song playlist, they need at least 300-400 to keep the station sounding fresh every time you tune in. In this cutthroat market, they are going to need to do that.

Rumor is that KSL is going to do a big change for their after 7:00 p.m. programming. I suspect that some of the stuff from K-uterus radio will end up there.

That last one, K-uterus, is a howler. I don't think I had heard that one before about the former format. Has anyone else ever called the old format that?
I've heard some very fast liners on KSL about some shows coming but it went by so fast I have not been able to discern what it's all about.
In listening to 820, it appears they are testing the HD stick also. They may have accidentally left that on overnight a couple times, because there's a very high-pitched heterodyne tone that washes it out in the fringe area in Provo at night.
As for the playlist, it is all-LDS with some CCM as advertised. Typically soft-AC in style, with some B/EZ and even classical thrown in (Tabernacle Choir, a couple of others). They also seem to be taking the 'adult hits' approach to the playlist, although there are regular repeats of some songs probably because the desired playlist may not be fully programmed in yet. They need at least 400-600 songs in various rotation levels for this one not to lose listeners as fast as they gain them.
The liners/sweepers are reworkings of the old talk format liners.

I agree it's a grand experiment by KSL - but I really wonder if hiring a bunch of newbie reporters is going to succeed. I do not think so - thus "radio hindenburg!!" KSL wants to do "NPR on caffiene" with this show. I really have doubts they'll succeed. |
