Well, no sooner had I brought up a poll about rock stations, than a rumor passed by my desk today about one. And not just any station, get this.... INDI ROCK STATION. That's right. The rumor going around is that a new company is starting up in downtown SLC come this fall, and it's going to only feature independant label artists.
Scary thought huh?
I don't know if this is fact or just plain fiction, but I thought it was newsworthy. Anyone else hear this rumor, and know if there's any truth to it? It would be interesting to know if it's a reality, because thats the kind of station that could actually give X96 and KBER a run for their money.
The closest thing we have to any kind of independant/local rock out here is the two hour Sunday show on Channel called "Homegrown." NO, not the band, thats the show name. And even those people have to bribe people to get played on the air. Remember, I didn't say Payola!
But think about it, that's a damn fine idea if it's actually true. So did anyone else get word of that?

There was an application for 99.9 in Salt Lake as an LPFM, but it has about as much chance as a mouse at a cat convention. That channel is second adjacent to full power class C stations at 99.5 and 100.3. The FCC rules won't allow it.

At this rate, we might as well wait for a new community run station.

It took a few days but I finally recieved a response to an email I sent to the Summons Org. which I took the email address off the application from the fcc site. It states that they still have approval and was not dismissed from the LPFM cuts. They hope to be up by Fall of 2003 with a community style radio station just need extra funding. This station will only according to the email cover the local Salt Lake City area. So I'm saying IF this station does sign on, it will not be a commercial station. Just trying to do my part on finding the info about the 99.9 frequency. Noticed some nays on the forum about 99.9 but I guess time will tell if it happens.

99.9 LPFM in Salt Lake City cannot happen. Period. If it wasn't dismissed yet, it's because they haven't caught how ridiculous it is. Frankly the peopel who submitted it should be fined for not even doing basic research, but they probably won't. (There were a lot of this type of stupid application across the country, BTW.) Let's look at the rules. Start with 47 CFR 73.807 That's the ruleset for LPFMs. Go get the PDF of the rules at nolink.com/a45g (that's a short link to the FCC website. Near the top is the chart that shows the minimum distance an LP100 station needs to be from full service stations. In this case, the only applicable problems are KURR and KSFI, both second adjacent (2 channels away). The minimum distance required is 93km. According to FCC documents, (http://nolink.com/a45b for a shortcut to the search), KURR is 26.31km and KSFI is 26.58km. The 99.9 would need to be more than 3 times further from those stations than it is in order to be acceptable. And that's just one criteria. Who knows what else might crop up since the NAB effectively rewrote the LPFM rules. The ironic thing is that I wouldn't be too surprised if an equivalent power translator or booster in the same location would be perfectly acceptable according to the FCC. A good test case is K276DP (the KJQ translator on 103.1 in "Millcreek".) That runs 160w of power, so it's significantly higher than the 100w the 99.9 station would run. But putting that aside, assume K276DP was an LP100. Again, it would need to be 93km from second and third adjacent signals. There are 2: KQMB and KRSP, both 31.09km away. The LPFM rules also say that it would have to be at least 78km away from a co-channel (same channel) C3 station. The new KPEB/Huntsville at 103.1 is only 66.37km away. Nailed on 3 counts right there. I haven't heard any complaints about 103.1 in SLC causing problems for Star or Arrow. Just proves the requirements are ridiculous, but they do exist. Wishing them away won't help.

In defence, this may not be the first time the FCC has let something on the air that violates the rules, take "Juke Box Radio" in NYC, that ran for a number of years before the FCC came back and shut it down, and they approved it in the first place and it was against the rules for use of translators, IF 99.9 gets on the air it may be short lived
