I was listening to the True Oldies Channel this morning at around 6:30, and it was the same as usual. About an hour later, I tuned back in, and they are now running "America's Morning News". They were running ABC newscasts at the top of the hour. Has anyone heard anything about this?

The station is running sweepers with the new format change, 'Utah's Big Talker' is their positioner.
Jerry Doyle is on middays. Looks like they picked up whatever 570 and 105.7 didn't.
Another liner, politically charged, says, 'Your place to rock Barack', a reference to the tilt a lot of conservative talkers are going for this year so far.
In the end, this looks like a major format war brewing.
570 KNRS 630 KTKK 860 KKAT (new calls maybe??) 1160 KSL 1430 KLO 1480 KHQN (Utah County, more right-wing than the rest, could be considered extreme).
On FM:
88.3 KCPW (SL County mainly) 90.1 KUER (only 8pm-Midnight is not N/T anymore) 99.1 old KJMY translator (rebroadcasts 99.5 HD2) 102.7 KSL (simulcasts AM 105.7 KNRS (doesn't simulcast AM
HD2
90.9 HD2 'World Radio Network', mostly news programs 99.5 HD2/105.7 HD2 both simulcast 570 AM

According to Tom Taylor of Radio-Info,
"Citadel’s KKAT-AM, Salt Lake City (860) becomes “Utah’s Big Talker” today, giving up the “Wolf/True Oldies Channel” package and using talkshows such as Don Imus, Mark Levin, Joe Scarborough and Curtis Sliwa. Today’s also the day Imus becomes the morning show of Fox Business News, now originating from the News Corp. building in midtown Manhattan instead of the studios at WABC -"

I know this sounds self serving because I guess it is. I have tried to get back on the air on these new Talk Stations and it seems there is no room for LOCAL. I know that these syndicated formats take little work in having them on and in todays economy broadcasters are doing everything they can to stay on the air with the least amount of personnal as possible. What I don't understand is the missed revenue that could be gained by having at least some local programming that people who actually live and work here could relate to. I've listened to these shows and all they seem to be are Rush, Hannity, Beck et al over and over. It is boring and not entertaining in the least. I know there are many who didn't like my show and obviously plenty who did. At least it was LOCAL and you could actually get on the show to agree or disagree to your hearts content as I never thought of my show as anything but entertainment and fun. I guess I miss radio as it used to be and maybe it has passed me by and it's time for me to realize it. That said, I'd kill to have my show back somewhere and in my case, "Talk is cheap".

You are right on the "money!" Talk is cheap these days and there is little appreciation for local talent. No interaction with the audience from someone who is seasoned and understands the intricacies of Utah politics like yourself. One day when I'm rich and win the lotto, you'll be back on the air anchoring MY station! The only Utah host with any "reason!" Tom, it is no wonder why ratings suck these days! Blah, blah, blah! National garbage with little connection to the local scene nor with any connection to the audience. And to give you credit, YOU were the FIRST UTAH FM TALKER! I can remember when you simulcasted on both the AM and FM. Tom Barberi started it all, but like Rodney Dangerfield, he doesn't get any respect. Likely because the PD's are 20 something pukes who have no respect for the stuff of legends. Tom - YOU ARE A LEGEND!

I to wish we had local hosts that do something besides read from the Bible or B of M.
Tom I had listened to your show on Kall from around 1973/74 it was always great getting wound up for Utah by 5.

tbarberi - I too liked you show about 20 years ago, however I could only stand complaining against liquor laws, and Ute Tailgate talk for so long. Your right, some liked you and some didn't. Although I didn't particularly care for your show you do have a point that at least it was local.
Someone needs to discuss local issues, and the same stale talk on the popular AM/FM show is not the answer.
The last good local talk we have is Sports Talk. Lucky for me its college football season and my thist is quenched. Alas who will I listen to from January to August?

I'd listen to any station, AM or FM, all day if I knew they were invested in local talk. Even if I didn't care for the host. I'd even sit through those maddening Paramount Equity ads.
The guys at Nightside drive me nuts because they're just a bit too balanced for my liking. And they talk about boring stuff. But I listen to them quite often, because that's (at least to me) what radio's all about.

Sounds like they got Mancow on at noon! odd they wouldn't just use him as the morning show, I'm not a fan of FM geared radio shows being broadcast on AM! morning shows are the worst to put on AM, that's what I think, but I'm not ****ing, happy to have at least 1 entertaining radio show on in Utah!

Well outside of the fact I can barely hear this station up in Ogden, and can't hear it at all in the evening, what I do hear is this, Mancow is on from noon to 1pm, it's so cut up it makes no sense, there is a about 8 minutes of show before they go to commercials, in all id imagine there is 16 total minutes of Mancow in a day, followed by the worlds most generic radio show host, Jerry Doyle! Uh!!! he's horrible! what a train wreck for a station! I understand Phil Hendrie's on at night? I wouldn't know since it doesn't come it.

That explains it, then. I tried listening the other day and I couldn't make heads or tails of it. Other thoughts on the station: 1. It's conservative brand is a bit misplaced. Mancow may be a fiscal conservative, but he's socially very liberal. Joe Scarborough is a conservative moderate with a liberal co-host, and Phil Hendrie and Imus are anything but a conservative. 2. Jerry Doyle does suck. I couldn't stand him during 97.5's short run and I still can't. 3. Is it just me or does Joe Scarborough's host Mika B. not have the most pleasant radio voice in the world? I'm not a fan of Joe, and I'm certainly not a fan of Mika's politics, but dang. She could be reading the Dems 2,000 page health care bill and I'd listen to every minute of it. 4. Phil Hendrie hasn't lost his touch. Nice to have him back!

pretty bad when KOA 850 out of Denver conflicts with the weak 860 signal.

Why do radio stations even bother to broadcast when their night power is so low that you have to live within a block of the tower to be able to get a good undistorted AM signal?

I'm on the east side of Murray - used to be called Cottonwood - and I have no trouble receiving 860 at night. Phil Hendrie puts me to sleep every night.
But I can't get a decent signal on 1430 at night, and it's pretty borderline even in the daytime. I like listening to Laura Ingraham sometimes but I listen on XM because KLO is so weak.
While we're on the subject, I occasionally try to listen to 630, which has a strong enough signal, but the quality of their signal is worse than some of the over-modulated powerhouse Mexican stations I used to hear here in the 50's and 60's. What is their problem?
